Betty Ann Sensabaugh, Marisue Miller, Shana Forte Nichols, Lydia Harkey and Glenn Mautner. ABSENT: None STAFF PRESENT: Rosa Garcia — Children's Services Coordinator and Michele Harber — Community Outreach Librarian OTHERS PRESENT: Linda Nix — CTLS Lay Representative AGENDA 1. Minutes of last Meeting: The meeting was called to order by Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh at 6:30 PM Glenn Mautner made the motion to accept the minutes of the September 2011 Library Advisory Board Meeting and Marisue Miller seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. 2 DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Eric Lashley was on vacation and the report was given by Rosa Garcia. Rosa reported circulation was up for the month of September over the previous year and the circulation figures were higher than the previous year, with total checkouts equaling 527,746. This was impressive due to the fact that the library was open 6 less days in FY 2010-2011. Rosa reported visitations were also up for the year at 362,923. Other notable figures for the year: Children's program attendance = 13,282 Children's programs = 71 Internet usage = 97,441 OverDrive e-books checkouts = 1,739 OverDrive audio books checkouts = 1,035 Volunteer hours = 10,124.5 Copies added = 12,396 Copies withdrawn = 13,500 Donations added=2,839 Ms Garcia noted the dedication of the stain glass window to Dixie Hanna was held on September 18 as well as a concert by Manachi de Jalisco Eric and Linda nix attended the CTLS meeting in Cedar Park on September 23 and Linda bought Eric a delicious lunch. Rosa reported Eric spoke to the Sun City Rotary Club and Daughters of the American Revolution on September 6 and September 8. Rosa announced there will be a special music program held on Thursday, October 6 by classical guitarist Michael Nigro as well as our annual Halloween parties on October 26 at 10:30 a.m. and October 28 from 6:30 PM — 8:30 PM. Rosa read aloud the patron comments for the month of September. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: 1. Introduction of Michele Harber, Community Outreach Librarian — Rosa Garcia: Rosa introduced Michele Harber, the new Community Outreach Librarian. Michele told the board what she planned to accomplish with the bookmobile as well as the locations with which she has been in contact. 2. Bookmobile — Rosa Garcia: Rosa reported the Friends have raised approximately $105,000 for the bookmobile. The Friends have scheduled two future fundraisers; a lunch on October 19 in honor of Dr. Morton King, who was a founder of the Friends organization, and a wine tasting on December 5 sponsored by Grape Creek Wineries. 3. Filing vacant staff positions — Rosa Garcia: Rosa reported the library has two vacant positions: a cataloging librarian position as well as the library assistant position vacated by Michele Harber. Eric has submitted requisitions for these positions to be posted. These positions are critical for the library to maintain our current level of service. 4. Report on quarterly meeting, future of CTLS — Linda Nix: Linda reported she and Eric attended the CTLS Membership meeting on Friday, September 23. Linda said CTLS hoped to raise over $300,000 by August 2012 to maintain services. If funds are not raised by August 2012, CTLS may have to close the doors. Linda also reported the changes to the Inter -Library Loan programs taking place across the state. 5. Schedule of future meetings — Rosa Garcia: The November 2011 meeting has been canceled. No other future meetings have been canceled or rescheduled. Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh adjourned the meeting at 7:30 PM. Respectfully submitted, 5 , .VT ,uwa, Marisue Miller , Secretary CL' Betty Ann Sensabaugh, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY September 2011 HIGHLIGHTS • Library staff and friends of former library employee Dixie Sue Hanna dedicated a stained glass window to Dixie's memory on Sunday, September 18. Dixie, who died in 2007 after putting in a regular day at the library, worked for the library for more than twenty years. During that time she selected nearly all of the library's adult materials. Rachael Pattillo, a member of the library staff, designed the 2-pane window, and Susan Dittmar of Inspiration Glass translated the design into stained glass. Ed Rollman of the City's facilities staff did the installation. Donations from Dixie's friends paid for the window. • The Williamson County Art Guild filled both galleries with art works in a wide variety of media, including oil, watercolor, acrylic, photographs, and mixed media. • Mariachi de Jalisco, whose five members played instruments and sang, too, entertained an enthusiastic crowd on Sunday, September 18. • Michele Harber was selected to be the public outreach (bookmobile) librarian. More than 100 persons applied for the job and the four who interviewed besides Michele were extremely qualified applicants. Michele, who completed her MIS degree about two years ago, joined the staff as a library assistant in January 2011. She had done her homework before the interviews. We were very impressed by her understanding of our goals for the bookmobile and she offered concrete ideas about how to achieve those goals. • There were no cuts to the library's budget in the FY 11/12 budget Council approved on September 13. STAFF ACTIVITIES • On September 6 and 8 Eric Lashley went with Judy Apel to speak to the Sun City Rotary Club and the Daughters of the American Republic about the bookmobile fundraising campaign. • On September 23, Eric Lashley attended the CTLS quarterly meeting in Cedar Park. The direction that CTLS will take in the coming year remains unclear. PATRON COMMENTS FOR September 2011 Comment: Not sure what started the "Let's have Statues" idea at the GT library, but enough already! We looked at grotesque busts and horrific art pieces, but looking at a Rhinoceros Ass for months was really the topper. Yes, it is politically correct to pretend that any artwork is acceptable, but true art reflects beauty, in design color form, etc. Just because someone chooses to "up chuck" with art supplies does not make it art and DOES NOT make it appropriate in the PUBLIC LIBRARY — where it is forced on everyone (yes, I said forced.) Please reconsider the constant stream of tripe that is offending our senses at every glance. When I am in a library, considering or pondering the material I've just read, I don't appreciate looking up and seeing ugly or grotesque sights. Comment: Thank you for changing the hold music! Comment: The self checkout computers were not working on Sunday but not I employee bothered to put a sign up to this fact. Comment: Something needs to be done about the speed of the Internet. Spent over I hour trying to get into an application. Unacceptable. (Never got it/left) Comment: Great music collection but needs more metal, alternative, and Hip Hop. • Comment: More, more and more there is less less and less service. That is why I love this lace. r Y p Service with a smile every time! Comment: "Library" is usually a quiet place. I didn't realize that my schedule would be so jammed with travel when I applied for the position. It seems that the weeks I am away happen to be the weeks of the library board meetings. The library deserves to have members of the Board who can meet their obligations for attendance. Therefore, although sad., I would like to resign so that someone else who will be able to attend the meetings more regularly can take my place as a more steady participant. I hope that in future years, as my travel schedule becomes less filled, I might apply again for the Board and help with the many worthy projects that you and the library undertake. You are an outstanding library administrator and the Georgetown library, under your direction, is quite extraordinarily unique! What a pleasure it is to have such a valuable resource so close by.
