ABSENT: Anjeanette Benefield STAFF IN ATTENDENCE. Eric Lashley - Library Director OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE: Linda Nix — CTLS Lay Representative MINUTES: The meeting was called to order by Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh at 6.30 PM. David Ciambrone made the motion to accept the minutes of the January 2011 Library Advisory Board Meeting and Glenn Mautner seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Eric thanked Kathyrn and Angie for their service to the Library Advisory Board. Director Lashley announced the Board would have two members at the March meeting. The new members are Rashelle Karp and Lydia Harkey Betty Ann Sensabaugh was reappointed as Chair. Eric reported circulation for the month of January was slightly higher than last year, but visitations were down due in part to last year's Holocaust exhibit which brought in large crowds. Eric reported Georgetown patrons have checked out 254 e-books and downloaded 218 audiobooks from our new OverDrive service which began on December 17. Director Lashley announced the Central Texas Digital Consortium will be meeting in Temple, TX on February 18 to discuss the organization of the consortium. Eric reported tax assistance has begun and is operating 4 days a week. Patrons are able to e-file or paper file with the assistance of our volunteers. Director Lashley reported the author series event by H.W Brands was a huge success. Approximately 150 turned out for the event. Eric read the patron comments. Eric announced on February 20, the band Lucky Strikes will perform at the Library from 2:00 — 4:00 PM. The Library will be hosting a children's illustrator festival called "Picture Circus" on Saturday, April 30 Eric also announced that Linda Nix and he would be attending a regional CTLS meeting on March 4 in Bertram, TX. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: 1. Bookmobile - Eric Lashley* Enc reported Council gave approval to move forward with the bookmobile project Eric noted the Friends have formed a fundraising committee and they will be meeting on February 15 to adopt a theme and logo. 2. Report on January CTLS membership meeting - Linda Nix: Linda reported she and Eric attended the annual CTLS membership meeting in Belton, TX on January 28. Linda read a list of CTLS award winners The major news of the meeting was the proposed budget cuts to the State Library which affect both CTLS and member libraries. The two cuts that would affect our library the most were the cuts to the Loan Star Libraries funding and the TexShare databases Eric noted those two cuts may equal a $20,000 loss of funding to the Library. Linda encourages members to contact our State representatives if they felt the cuts should be spared. 3. Possible Arts Center - Eric Lashley Eric reported there were discussions to convert the police station into an arts center, if the Public Safety bond proposed for May is passed Eric noted he and Judy Fabry are the staff liaisons for the Arts and Culture Board and they have made a recommendation to move forward with converting the police station into a visual arts center. More research and plans need to be made before a final decision will be made on the future of the police facility. 4. Georgetown Reads' - Eric Lashley Eric reported the Georgetown Reads! program will kick-off on April 1. We are planning for an author talk, author dinner, canned food drive, cooking demonstration, scavenger hunt, and wine tasting. More information will be provided at the March board meeting. 5. Schedule of future meetings - Eric Lashley: Board members did not have the need to make any changes at this time to future meeting dates. Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh adjourned the meeting at 7:25 PM. Brands, author of American Colossus: The Triumph of Capitalism, 9865- 1900, who spoke can January 13, drew more than 125 people, the largest audience yet in the Friends' Hill Country Authors series, • The live music event in January was a performance by the Hill Country Wind Octet. The group played classical selections to an appreciative audience. • " Wes Odell's photographic exhibit from December was extended through January. Mr. Odell donated one of his phonographs, selected by popular vote of the staff, to the library. It is now hanging on the east wall of the public access computer area. • Michele Harber accepted the position of Library Assistant, which opened in December after Gail Pruett's resignation, and began work can January 24. • On January25 the City Council approved Director Lashley's request to move forward with the bookmobile project and gage permission for the library to apply for two grants associated with the project, one from the State Library and one from the LC STAFF ACTIVITIES • The Georgetown Reads! committee met and began firming up plans for the program that will kick off in late March. Planned activities include a scavenger hunt, canned goods drive; cookbook give-away, wine -tasting; cooking demonstration, author visit, and a paid evening event with the author of Already Nome, Susan Mallery. • Eric Lashley and Linda Nix traveled to Belton on January 28 to attend the quarterly CTLS membership meeting. Proposed drastic cuts in the budget of the Mate Library, which will affect all libraries in Texas, was the primary topic of discussion.
