ABSENT: None STAFF IN ATTENDENCE Eric Lashley - Library Director OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE: Sheri Miklaski — Public Services Librarian, Linda Nix — CTLS Lay Representative MINUTES: The meeting was called to order by Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh at 6:30 PM David Ciambrone made the motion to accept the minutes of the September 2010 Library Advisory Board Meeting and Glenn Mautner seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING. 1. Introduction of Sheri Miklaski, Public Services Library — Eric Lashley. Due to time constraints, Betty Ann changed the order of the agenda and allowed Sheri Miklaski to be introduced to the board prior to the Director's report. Sheri has worked for the library for more than one month. She is a recent graduate of the University of Texas - School of Information. Sheri has a background working with nonprofit organizations. She grew up in Detroit, MI and is a graduate of the University of Michigan. The board members introduced themselves to Sheri. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lashley reported that circulation for the fiscal year ended with 524,610 checkouts. Eric reported circulation was up for the month of October as well as visitations. Eric noted the first floor shelving had been rearranged to give more visibility to the coffee shop. Eric reported a number of new sculptures had been installed at the library. These sculptures are part of the new sculpture trail the Arts and Culture Board has coordinated with the Texas Society of Sculptors. Eric announced the following upcoming events: • Gingerbread house competition begins December 3 • Music Program — Golden Years Combo performs November 21 • Yoga classes will begin on Wednesday, November 10. Yoga classes will be offered every Wednesday at noon. • The library will have a barrel to collect toys for the Blue Santa program during the holiday seasons Shana Nichols asked if it would be possible to have a canned food drive at the Library. Linda Nix is a member of the Board of the Caring Place and said she would arrange for a barrel to be placed in the library to collect food during the holidays. Eric read the patron comments for the months of September and October. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: 2. Overdrive downloadable audiobooks — Eric Lashley: Eric demonstrated the beta website for the Overdrive audiobooks. Eric noted the staff would be trained the week of November 15-21 and he hoped to open the program to the public soon. 3. New adult graphic novel collection — Eric Lashley: Eric reported the library has created a new category of library materials for adult graphic novels. The juvenile and teen graphic novels have become very popular and the staff had received some graphic novels that were more for adults than teens. The staff believed that books with adult themes should be located in the adult collection and placed on the second floor of the library. 4. Bookmobile — Eric Lashley: Eric reported that representatives of the Friends of the Library would be meeting with City Manager Paul Brandenburg to discuss the possibility of starting a bookmobile program next fiscal year and to discuss the possibility of "un-freezing" the current frozen position within the library's budget. 5. Board members' input regarding library website — Eric Lashley: Using a Proxima projector, Eric projected the library's website onto the conference room wall and asked board members to comment on what they felt needed attention. Board members commented they wanted to be sure anything that appeared on the front-page was current. Other comments: • New York Times Bestseller page needs to be dated • Blog articles need to have a (read more) button at the end of the text instead of the (. .) • Staff e-mails should be clickable • Contact Us information should be more visible • Address of the library should be at the top of the page with the hours of operation • Databases should be easier to get to and used • Database icons on the catalog page look like advertisements Chair Betty Anne Sensabaugh adjourned the meeting at 7:40 PM. Respectfully submitted, Anjebnette Courtin, Secretary Betty Anne Sensabaugh, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY September -October 2010 BJw • Sheri Miklaski joined the staff October 4 as our public services librarian. She is a recent graduate of UT's School of Information Studies and before attending graduate school had worked for a number of years for nonprofit organizations. • More of the shelving for new adult materials has been rearranged to run east -west instead of north -south, which gives a more open feeling to the area and a better sight line to the coffee shop. • With Mike Gullickson handling the arrangements, the library sponsored the first annual Georgetown Poetry Festival October 1-3. The event featured poetry readings, writing workshops, and a musical performance by poet -songwriter Nathan Brown. • Members of the Sun City Photography Club displayed their work in the 2"d floor galleries during September, and were followed in October by entries in the 2010 Art Hop, which was sponsored by Georgetown Art Works. • September's live music performance was by Mariachi Jalisco and Cienfuegos, a quartet specializing in Cuban music, played for October's live music event. Both performances were well attended and received many compliments. • Several sculptures were added to the library's indoor rotating collection during October. On October 26 Julio Sanchez de Alba of El Paso placed his 3-ton black rhino at the south entrance of the library, where it will remain for a year. Dar Richardson, of the Arts and Culture Board, has made the arrangements for these and other additions to the Georgetown Sculpture Tour, most of which are in San Gabriel Park. • The staff observed Halloween on October 28 when they came to work dressed as characters from Alice in Wonderland. Ms. Rosa and her staff and volunteers put on a family Halloween party on the evening of October 29.
