ABSENT: Anjeanette Courtin STAFF IN ATTENDENCE Eric Lashley, Library Director OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE: Linda Nix (CTLS Lay Representative) MINUTES: The meeting was called to order by Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh at 6 30 PM. David Ciambrone made the motion to accept the minutes of the July 2010 Library Advisory Board Meeting and Glenn Mautner seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. DIRECTOR'S REPORT: Director Lashley reported that circulation was up in July, but visitations were down. Eric announced Internet usage was at an all time high of 9,830 users for the month of July. Eric reported the library discarded more books this month than we added due to our weeding project. Director Lashley reported there were 120 entries in our teen art competition. He also reported the library had a good attendance at the Inside Out Steel band concert and that Elliot Wilde, a classical guitarist, will be performing on August 15. Eric announced he, David Ciambrone, and Glenn Mautner attended Sun City's first book festival on Friday, August 6. Eric also announced artist Nick Ramos' art work is currently being exhibited in the library and he will be having a reception on August 16 from 5:00 PM to 8 OOPM. Eric reported that Richard Groves, public services librarian, has resigned and will be moving to Tennessee at the end of the month. Eric read the patron comments for the month of July and showed the videos of the last week of summer reading and the art competition winners and honorable mentions. CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING: • Overdrive downloadable audiobooks — Eric Lashley* Eric displayed a sample website from the Woodlands Digital Library. He explained some of the features of the new downloadable audio books and said he hoped to have our library's new site launched in September. • Bookmobile — Eric Lashley: Director Lashley announced he was concerned about the timing of the bookmobile in regards to the City's budget cycle. He said the Friends of the Library were willing to raise the funds needed to purchase a vehicle, but the Library needed their one frozen position to be used to operate a bookmobile program Eric said that at their August 11 meeting the Friends will be discussing approaching councilmembers to gain support for the project. • Clarification regarding meeting absences (25°l0) — Eric Lashley* Eric reminded board members to be aware of the City's policy that requires board members to attend at least 75% of the posted meetings. The City does not calculate excused and unexcused absences. • Weeding projects underway - Eric Lashley: Director Lashley reported the Iibranans are weeding very heavily to help make room for shifting the nonfiction, fiction, reference, and Spanish collections. The first floor area also will be rearranged. • Parking — Eric Lashley* Eric reported the City has made inquiries to the County to find out the County's willingness to sell the vacant lot across the street from the library, which the City would use for a parking structure. At this time, the County has not responded positively to these inquires Eric did announce the property at the corner of 8th and Rock is for sale and could be an alternate site for a parking garage. • Future Library Board meeting schedule - The board did not make a decision to cancel the October meeting, but would like to see this item on future agendas to give the board the option to cancel a meeting if necessary. Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh adjourned the meeting at 7:30 PM. Respectfully submitted, nette Courtin, Secretary Betty Ann Sensabaugh, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY July 2010 HIGHLIGHTS • Gary Yarrington, sculptor of The Book, which has been on display on the second floor bridge, has arranged for several donors to purchase the sculpture for the library's permanent collection of art. • The summer programs for children and teens wound up successfully on July 30. This year Ms. Rosa had drawings for the grand prizes rather than giving prizes to the children who read the most. This year the children who were registered for the reading program read 6376 books and read for 2035 hours. The teens who registered for the reading program read for a total of 935 hours. More than 500 teens participated in the summertime events, one of which was an art contest. Approximately 50 young artists submitted 120 works for the contest. • For the second year, Ms. Rosa had special events for tweens (ages 9-12) during the summer. The response to these programs was very positive and Ms. Rosa plans to continue having special tween activities throughout the year. • There are videos on the library website made of pictures taken during the summer kids' events. • On July 18 the Inside Out Steelband played music for a large audience. The members of the group spent some time showing how their instruments worked and they invited the audience to try playing them. Staff received many positive comments about the event.
