The Parks and Recreation Board of the City of Georgetown, Texas, met on Thursday , October 14, 2010.

Regular Meeting
1. Call to order
The meeting was called to order at 7 pm by Kent Buikema.
2. Roll Call
3. Introduction of staff member Elliott Pervinich, Challenge Course Coordinator
Elliott Pervinich was introduced by Kimberly Garrett. Pervinich explained the function of the
Challenge Course and different groups that use the course. Kimberly Garrett gave history of the
Challenge Course and the grant received by Texas Parks and Wildlife to construct the course. There
was discussion of marketing and revenue for the Challenge Course.
4. Discussion on Board Goals
Garrett went to staff for feedback about how the board can assist the PARD. The staff stated they
need volunteers at events. Garrett also brought the by-laws to the meeting about the purpose of the
board. She stated this may need to be revised if the board wants to change their duties. There was
discussion about boards in other cities and how the dynamics of each city is different. Not every city
has a parks board. Garrett stated she spoke to a representative from the City of Killeen Parks and
Recreation Department and they are obtaining information for starting a parks board. Garrett will
obtain the survey from the City of Killeen and present it to the board.
5. Update on Youth Advisory Board
There were 11 youth that applied for the Youth Advisory Board. They were appointed by the Mayor
at Tuesday night's City Council meeting.
6. Information and timeline on Bond Projects
Garrett stated City Council approved the issuance of $2.511 million in bonds for parks projects.
Staff will start working on the grant for TPWD which is due the end of January. The application for
the grant is to get a match to make the trail [Honey go farther. A Request for Qualifications (RFQ)
will be sent out for the architect for the special events/festival area in San Gabriel Park.
7. Update on flood damage from the September 8th Flood
The current repair estimate for the flood damage is $230,828. The repair for the flood damage will
not be federally funded. Laemel asked if any of the repairs are covered by insurance. Garrett stated
that some are covered by insurance. Everything that is an insurable structure is covered under
insurance. The granite in the trail is covered. The switchback received damage from the flood and
will be repaired. The switchback was built with the 1996 grant which has soil behind the retaining
wall.
8. Discussion on TRAPS workshop to be held November 191h
Garrett stated there are education classes that participants can attend and there is also a maintenance
rodeo. Garrett stated the board members could volunteer for this event. They need judges for the
rodeo and room monitors for the classroom sessions. The workshop will be from about 8 am — 4 pm.
They re are expecting about 200 participants.
9. Update from Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation
Laemel stated there is a white collection barrel at the Recreation Center to collect swim suits, towels
and goggles. Laemel stated The Caring Place donated swim noodles and swimsuits. Cody Pools has
donated $1,000.00 to be platinum sponsors of the Georgetown Swims program to purchase all new
equipment and supplies. The Friends of Georgetown Parks and Recreation now have a table banner
that will be used when the Friends group attends events and it can be put at the Recreation Center. It
will also be used for marketing at different events. Jamaal O'Neal from The Williamson County Sun
attended ingattending the last meeting, he interviewed the Laemel's and took a picture of the
committee at the Recreation Center pool. Becky Laemel will be presenting information to the staff at
the Recreation Center at their next staff meeting.
10. Discussion of Parks and Recreation Monthly Review for September
There was brief discussion about the Monthly Review.
11. Approve minutes from September 9th meeting
Bob Laemel made a motion to approve the minutes and the motion was seconded by Daniel
Dance and it was passed by unanimous vote.
