HomeMy WebLinkAboutDay of Prayer_5.7.2009 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, the history of this great nation is indelibly marked with the role that prayer has played in the lives of individual Americans, and in the development of the United States as a whole, dating back to when the event was first proclaimed by the Continental Congress in 1775; and WHEREAS, we, as Americans, recognize that we are just as helpless as the citizens of this nation were in 1775, in correcting seemingly uncorrectable modern-day problems of social unrest brought about by crime, poverty, racial strife, the disruption brought about by various natural disasters, and the ever possible threat of global war; and WHEREAS, as a nation we are at a crossroads, having drifted far from our Christian roots. America needs to take the path of humbling ourselves before God and asking Him to bring us back to the spiritual foundations upon which this great nation was built; and WHEREAS, the theme of this year’s event in Georgetown is: “Prayer...America’s Hope.” Therefore, we ask that all Christians unite their hearts and pray Psalm 33:22, which reads: “May your unfailing love rest upon us, O Lord, even as we put our hope upon you.” NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim Thursday, May 7, 2009, as NATIONAL DAY OF PRAYER and call upon the citizens of Georgetown to join with other Americans, not just today, but every day, to ask for guidance from those in authority and humbly pray for the mercy, protection, and healing of our nation.
