HomeMy WebLinkAboutMotorcycle Safety- May 2009 PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, with more than 300,000 motorcycles, scooters and mopeds registered in Texas, and that number grows each year, more and more of our friends, relatives and neighbors are riding motorcycles for recreation and transportation on the Texas roads; and WHEREAS, motorcyclists are virtually unprotected by the motorcycle when considering vehicle crashworthiness that directly contributes to rider safety and suffer significantly more injuries or death than other motorists; and WHEREAS, it is especially important that the citizens of Georgetown be aware of motorcyclists on the streets and highways and recognize that more than 50 percent of motorcycle crashes occur because the motorist in a car or truck hits a motorcycle because they didn’t see the motorcyclist or didn’t respond in time; and WHEREAS, the importance of motorcycle safety training for riders to avoid crashes. Riders with specialized motorcycle safety training are taught to use motorcycles’ agility, maneuverability and ability to stop and swerve quickly to avoid potential crashes. Riders with the specialized motorcycle safety training avoid crashes more often and survive more often (when they do crash) than untrained riders; and WHEREAS, all motorcyclists organizations, clubs, dealerships, groups, law enforcement agencies and highway officials should join together to actively promote safe operation, increased rider training, and motorists awareness; and WHEREAS, during this month, all riders and drivers should unite to promote the safe sharing of roadways throughout Georgetown, Williamson County and Texas. THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, Mayor of the City of Georgetown, Texas, do hereby proclaim the month of May 2009 as MOTORCYCLE SAFETY AND AWARENESS MONTH and urge all motor vehicle operators to join in this effort to keep our highways safe.
