HomeMy WebLinkAboutRelay for Life 2009 P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life is an overnight celebration of life and cancer survivorship, and since its inception in 1985 has become a worldwide movement to end cancer, with relay events being held in 24 countries, with more countries joining the effort each year, and WHEREAS, teams of people from all walks of life have fun while raising much needed funds to fight cancer, and raise awareness of cancer prevention and treatment, and the Relay is a unique team event designed to raise awareness about cancer and raise funds to support the American Cancer Society’s mission of eliminating cancer; and WHEREAS, one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime, and the money raised at Relay events saves lives by funding cutting edge cancer research, early detection and prevention education, advocacy efforts, and life affirming patient services; and WHEREAS, the Relay For Life is community driven, and it is a great way for the community to work together in the fight against cancer, with teams of people, including local businesses, friends, families, hospitals, religious organizations and clubs, gather at community sites and take turns walking, jogging or running laps; and WHEREAS, the Relay is a moving celebration of cancer survivorship and a healing experience for the newly diagnosed, and every dollar raised goes toward fighting cancer in four main ways: research, education, advocacy and patient services; and WHEREAS, the Georgetown Relay for Life is to be held April 17, 2009 at Forbes Middle School; NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim April 17, 2009 as GEORGETOWN RELAY FOR LIFE DAY And ask all citizens to join in this worthwhile cause at Forbes Middle School to celebrate successes and memorialize lost battles.
