P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed the first Arbor Day to
the State Board of Agriculture, in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, an estimated one million trees were planted at that first Arbor
Day in Nebraska, and
WHEREAS, today, Arbor Day has spread beyond the United States and
is observed in many countries around the world; and
WHEREAS, trees help to prevent soil erosion, they create oxygen, cool
and clean the air, provide wildlife habitat, and help to beautify our world; and
WHEREAS, on this day, the Georgetown Garden Club will be holding an
Arbor Day celebration and Flower Show.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF
GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim the 17th of April, 2010 as:
ARBOR DAY
