HomeMy WebLinkAboutFounders Day_5.8.2010P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, early settlers of western Milam County petitioned for a closer seat of local government due to the distances required to attend the courts of Milam County and on March 13, 1848, the Texas Legislature established Williamson County and named it in honor of Robert M. Williamson who was an early Texas judge, legislator, and Major in the first Texas Rangers; and WHEREAS, in May 1848, Williamson County’s first six commissioners met under a stately oak tree to determine the location of the new county seat and at that first assembly, George Glasscock with his partner Thomas Huling, donated a parcel of land extending from the oak tree to the banks of the South San Gabriel River for the county seat. The offer was accepted and the new town named in honor of George Glasscock; and WHEREAS, in 1930 the Daughters of the American Revolution placed a marker at 9th and Church Streets in honor of the historic meeting and site; and WHEREAS, we join with the Daniel Coleman Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and all citizens in commemorating this momentous event in our city’s history; NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim MAY 8th, 2010 as Founders Day In Georgetown, Texas
