WHEREAS, in 1872, J. Sterling Morton proposed the first Arbor Day at the
State Board of Agriculture, in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, an estimated one million trees were planted at that first Arbor
Day in Nebraska; and
WHEREAS, today, Arbor Day has spread beyond the United States and is
observed in many countries around the world; and
WHEREAS, trees help prevent soil erosion, they create oxygen, cool and
clean the air, provide wildlife habitat, and help beautify our world; and
WHEREAS, on this day, the Georgetown Garden Club will have a tree
planting in San Gabriel Park.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF
GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim MAY 12th, 2010 as
ARBOR DAY
