P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, the American Business Women’s Association was founded on September 22, 1949,
with the following Mission Statement: “To bring together businesswomen of diverse occupations and to
provide opportunities for them to help themselves and others to grow personally and professionally through
leadership, education, networking support, and national recognition.”
WHEREAS, the American Business Women’s Association (ABWA) is a non-profit, prestigious
business organization made up of thousands of professionals across the nation, and the membership in
ABWA represents a range of 23 different industries. ABWA has provided education, workplace skills and
career-development training for more than 560,000 members; and
WHEREAS, ABWA also supports education through national scholarships and, since its
inception, has awarded over 15,250 scholarships worth over $15.4 million through the Stephen Bufton
Memorial Educational Fund; and
WHEREAS, “American Business Women’s Day” on September 22nd celebrates the important
contributions that more than 57 million American working women and 7.7 million women business owners
are making to this nation; and
WHEREAS, the ABWA founding date was recognized in 1983 and 1986 by Congressional
Resolution and Proclamation issued by President Ronald Reagan to recognize the achievements of all
workingwomen in the United States; and
WHEREAS, the Red Poppy of Texas Chapter was recognized on July 28, 2011 by the
Georgetown Chamber of Commerce at a ribbon-cutting event and will have a 12th Anniversary Celebration
as a Chartered Chapter in Georgetown, Texas on October 20, 2011; and
WHEREAS, the membership has monthly meetings, provides on-going networking opportunities
as well as business-related educational programs, and has participated in community events such as the
annual Red Poppy Festival and the Georgetown Christmas Stroll; and
WHEREAS, the ABWA will celebrate its 62nd Anniversary on September 22, 2011 at the 2011
ABWA National Women’s Leadership Conference in Irving, Texas.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclaim, September 22, 2011 as American Business Women’s Day
