P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, June 19, 2011, marks the 146th Anniversary of the day Texas
slaves were officially free; and
WHEREAS, June 1865, commemorates the day General Gordon Granger
landed at Galveston, Texas to take charge of the State of Texas and
announced that Texas slaves were free; and
WHEREAS, Juneteenth will be celebrated by the City of Georgetown,
sponsored by the Georgetown Cultural Citizen Memorial Association on June
18, 2011;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF
GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim June 18, 2011, as the time for
commemoration of
JUNETEENTH
in Georgetown, Texas
