P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, in 1990, Norm and Lynda Peters, David and Marion Flowers and Jim Durham made
the decision to honor a commitment made to unknown people in a remote area in Honduras by
another non-profit mission group that closed their doors due to funding issues; and
WHEREAS, these five people stepped forward to create a non-profit organization called MEDICO
(Medical, Eye and Dental International Care Organization, Inc.) which sends teams of medical
professionals to impoverished communities in order to address various medical issues, enhance the
quality of life of the residents and, literally, save lives; and
WHEREAS, hundreds of doctors, dentists, optometrists, nurses, translators and people from all
walks of life have come together as strangers, paid their own way to serve and have given up a
week of their time to help others in adverse conditions; and
WHEREAS, thanks to the strong leadership of a dedicated Board of Directors, careful and
conservative planning, incredible administrative staff energies and committed donor support,
MEDICO has become a role model which other non-profits seek to emulate; and
WHEREAS, MEDICO is celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2011 and will be sending its 137th team to
Central America.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, GEORGE GARVER, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, do hereby proclaim March 5, 2011 as
MEDICO DAY
