HomeMy WebLinkAboutMain Street Christmas Ornament_12.01.20014' ;- r t F,. , a t � Aye } f1 t Al c_ x q ° ` !f -A, �'' WHEREAS, Old Grace Church is a community landmark of local, state, and national significance which was built in 1881 -82 at the corner of 10th and Main Streets and is the oldest wooden church structure in Georgetown, and WHEREAS, Old Grace is listed on the National Register of Historic Places maintained by the Secretary of the Department of the Interior as the defined list of national significant structures in America, and WHEREAS, this Gothic Revival structure served the congregation of Grace Episcopal Church at its East University Avenue location until 1991 at which time the Diocese desanctified the building and donated it to the people of Georgetown, and WHEREAS, Old Grace Church was relocated and restored through a unique historic preservation partnership between the City of Georgetown and Georgetown Heritage Society, and WHEREAS, Old Grace Church is the focal point of Founders Memorial Park which commemorates the City's founding in 1843, and WHEREAS, Old Grace Church, now in its third century, is known as Grace Heritage Center and is the home of Georgetown Heritage Society and continues to be actively used by the public, and WHEREAS, the holiday season is a special time of year for community and family, and Georgetown Heritage Society has commissioned a limited - edition, commemorative Christmas ornament replicating Old Grace Church to be the first in an annual "Olde Towne Treasures" series of Georgetown landmarks, and inasmuch as the citizens of the community take pride in this architectural asset, NOW, THEREFORE, I, MARYELLEN KERSCH, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim this Christmas ornament as the official ornament of the City of Georgetown for the year 2001. Mayor
