GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, TO JOIN THE TEXAS HISTORICAL
COMMISSION'S (THC) TEXAS MAIN STREET CITIES IN AN EFFORT
TO BE NAMED AS A PRESERVE AMERICA DESIGNATED
COMMUNITY.
WHEREAS, First Lady Laura Bush has launched Preserve America, a historic
preservation initiative to encourage and support community efforts for the historic preservation
and enjoyment of our cultural and natural heritage assets;
WHEREAS, Preserve America is a White House initiative that focuses the President's
efforts to preserve our national heritage, support the economic vitality of our communities and
increase local participation in preserving the country's irreplaceable cultural and natural heritage
assets;
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown, Texas is a historic city, with multiple historic
resources and designated historical sites and assets and has demonstrated a commitment to
the protection of the community's heritage and the development of Heritage Tourism;
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has created the National Register Town Square
Historic and Downtown Overlay Districts to preserve the Georgetown's unique blend of
architecture;
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has established design guidelines for the Town
Square Historic District and created the Historic and Architectural Review Commission to
manage and enforce the guidelines;
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown Main Street Program has tracked over $23,000,000
in downtown reinvestment since 1982;
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown Main Street Program has helped develop a Historic
Walking Tour to promote the community's historic properties and to promote our cultural
heritage;
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown Main Street Program has developed heritage
festivals such as the Red Poppy Festival to promote the historical significance of red poppies in
Georgetown and to promote the official designation by the Texas Legislature of Georgetown as
the "Red Poppy Capital of Texas";
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, THAT:
SECTION 1. Findings. The facts and recitations contained in the preamble of this
resolution are hereby found and declared to be true and correct, and are incorporated by
reference herein and expressly made a part hereof, as if c opied v erbatim. T he C ity C ouncil
hereby finds that this resolution implements the following policies of the Century Plan - Policy
Plan Element:

1. Governmental Affairs Policy End 6.0, which states: "A high level of cooperation and
involvement exists among Georgetown's citizens and governmental organizations."
SECTION
2.
We
hereby direct the City Manager
to submit the City of Georgetown,
Texas nomination
to
be
designated a Preserve America
Community.
