HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 041304-V - Poppy Fest Temp Rd ClosureRESOLUTION NO. b 4 13 0 4- V A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, EXPRESSING SUPPORT OF THE RED POPPY FESTIVAL, ESTABLISHING THAT IT SERVES A PUBLIC PURPOSE, AND AUTHORIZING THE CITY TO ENTER INTO AN AGREEMENT FOR THE TEMPORARY CLOSURE OF STATE RIGHT OF WAY OF BUSINESS 35 WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown is the Red Poppy Capitol of Texas as designated by the Texas Legislature in 1990; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown is hosting the Red Poppy Festival annually in April on the Downtown Square, and WHEREAS, this festival will promote the cultural heritage of the red poppies in Georgetown, the historic Downtown Square, and tourism; and WHEREAS, citizens will enjoy a community -wide celebration of events consisting of a parade, arts and crafts, live music, food, children's activities, car show, and much more; and WHEREAS, the City Council of the City of Georgetown authorizes an agreement between the City and the Texas Department of Transportation for the temporary closure of Business 35 (Austin Avenue) for the purpose of conducting the Red Poppy Festival. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, THAT: SECTION 1. The facts and recitations contained in the preamble of this resolution are hereby found and declaredto be true and correct, and are incorporated by reference herein and expressly made a part hereof as if copied verbatim. The City Council hereby finds that this is resolution implements the following policy of the Century Plan — Policy Plan Element: 1. Economic Development Focus End 1.06.01 which states, "The downtown is economically viable", and 1.06.02 which states, `Georgetown's unique character is preserved," and 1.07 which states, 'The tourism industry in Georgetown is developed and promoted in a manner that compliments the City's unique character. ' SECTION 2. The City of Georgetown supports the Red Poppy Festival, establishes that it serves a public purpose, and supports entering into an agreement between the City and the Texas Department of Transportation for the temporary closure of state right of way of Business 81. SECTION 3. The Mayor is hereby authorizedto execute, and the City Secretary to attest thereto this resolution on behalf of the City of Georgetown. SECTION 4.
