Subject: August Library Advisory Board Agenda Item
Dear Board Member,
It was nice to see everyone at the meeting last night.
Following up from last night's meeting, I will place an agenda item for the August meeting concerning the labeling of the
shelves per Ms. Brett's request.
want to be clear that Ms. Brett's original agenda item dealt with a request for reconsideration of materials. The Library
Advisory Board is the jury for decisions relating to the request of reconsideration of materials and per our policy can
over -rule the Library Director's decisions.
In the case of labeling shelves, that is an administrative decision and I will bring it to the board for advice, but the Library
Advisory Board does not have jurisdiction to over -rule staff's decisions regarding those matters. If Ms. Brett isn't happy
with any policy changes or no policy change concerning the labeling of shelves, she can appeal to Paul Brandenburg, City
Manager.
0
In many regards, the Library Advisory Board's role moving forward is advisory only. That isn't a small role. I will take
your input as well as Ms. Brett's input very seriously. l will meet with my staff and report to the board the pros and cons
of labeling the shelves.
On a professional note, I am always cautious changing policies due to 1 complaint or concern. We have changed policies
over the years due to patron and board input. However, each time there was a policy change, we had to have a good
reason to change policy. At this point, I need to determine whether a policy needs to be changed or implemented based
on this one concerned patron.
THE FOLLOWING IS PROVIDED FOR YOUR INFORMATION ONLY. PLEASE DO NOT REPLY TO THE ORIGINATOR OF THE
FORWARDED MESSAGE, OR TO ANOTHER MEMBER, AS THAT COULD LEAD TO A VIOLATION OF THE OPEN MEETINGS
ACT. GROUP DISCUSSION OF THIS INFORMATION IS POSSIBLE BY POSTING AS A DISCUSSION ITEM FOR A FUTURE
MEETING.
Thanks,
Eric Lashley
