March 8, 1999
Present. Tom Barry, Nelda Burson, Joe Case, Nell Dickson, Jean Ehnebuske, Sheila Henderson,
Lisa Hopkins, Rachel Logue, Judy Parks.
Excused Absences: Sharon Sanders Webster, Dorothy Hagen
Nell called the meeting to order promptly at 6:30.
Minutes of the previous meeting were read and approved with Jean making the motion to
approve and Joe seconding the motion.
Comments from Citizens.
Sheila told of her experience visiting with residents of the Wesleyan Retirement
Home. She received many positive comments concerning the computers, staff,
and even the security system.
Comments from the Chair:
Nell reminded the Board of the approaching City appreciation dinner for board
and committee appointees and it was noted that Judy needed an invitation. Sheila
will see to that.
Library Director's Report and Statistics:
® Sheila said that TSL representative Wendy Clark will help to develop a plan to pull in
community involvement.
® We have not yet heard from the United Way concerning the amount they intend to give to
the library
Judy, Sheila, Judy Fabry, and Eric attended the TLA 1999 Legislative Day in Austin.
Judy reported that they were able to speak to Mike Krusee s representative and Steve
Ogden's representative about the house bills concerning libraries.
® Sheila expressed appreciation for the many books Jean and David Ehnebuske have
donated to the library.
Old Business:
•
Jean reported on the Library Foundation's Gala. She said the live auction netted $9,575
and the silent auction netted $2,732, making a total of $12,307. Those attending the gala
agreed that it was a beautiful affair and a huge success. Liz Carpenter was very
entertaining and George Nelson's band was enjoyed by all those who stayed to listen and
dance.
• Sheila informed us that Dr. Kaufmann has presented the library with 123 videos as well
as a TV and VCR.
• Judy reported that she had sent Governor Bush a letter encouraging him to support
increased funding for Texas libraries. She also read a letter received from Albert
Hawkins of the Texas Library and Archives Commission recognizing the letter she had
sent to that department.
• Sheila said the City Council had sent a resolution supporting increased funding for
libraries.
• The library board and staff retreat will. be June 4th and 5th, at the La Quinta in town.
New Business:
• Sheila has been selected by TLA to attend the Tall Texan's Leadership Institute.
• The board will not meet in April, July, or August. The May meeting will be a time to
prepare a review of the gala and a report of the accomplishment of many of the long
range plans, to be presented at the May 25th meeting of the City Council.
Tom inquired whether the library does something to show appreciation of the volunteers'
work and support. Sheila said that luncheons, receptions and presentation of gifts, such
as book bags, have been the usual forms of recognition.
Joe moved to adjourn the meeting and Tom seconded the motion The meeting adjourned at
7:15.

MONTHLY REPORT
GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY
February,1999
Highlights
Judy Fabry and Sheila Henderson met with Wendy Clark, Special Services Consultant for
the Texas State Library to discuss the library's participation in the Community
Advocacy Project. Six Texas libraries were selected for this project: Austin Public,
Bulverde Public, Canyon Public, Fayette Heritage Museum and Fayette Public, New
Waverly Public and Georgetown Public. The project is designed to increase public
awareness of and support for public libraries and to strengthen the efforts of local library
advocates.
United Way Representatives, Bob Cordier and Billie Schulz, met with Sheila
Henderson to discuss this year's grant request for a microform reader -printer and the
William County Sun microfilm. The cost of our proposal was approximately $20,000. A
response to the request is expected during the month of March.
Judy Fabry, Sheila Henderson and Eric Lashley attended the Texas Library Association's
1999 Legislative Day. CTLS Lay Representative, Judy Parks, also journeyed to Austin to
meet with Legislatures Mike Krusee and Steve Ogden and lobby for HB1673, which if
passed, will provide a permanent fund for Texas Public Libraries.
STAFF - Out and About!
Sheila Henderson met with United Way Representatives on February 3.
Sheila Henderson was a guest reader at McCoy Elementary School on Feb. 8.
Judy Fabry and Sheila Henderson met with TSL Special Services Coordinator,
Wendy Clark on Feb. 9.
Sheila Henderson requested a resolution from the City of Georgetown in support of
library legislation at the Feb. 9 Council meeting.
Sheila Henderson met with City and Community leaders to discuss TIF opportunities to
develop and implement a Community Access Network on Feb. 11.
Sheila Henderson met with GIST} Enrichment Coordinator, Jan Williams, to discuss
the 21 st Century Community Learning Center Grant on Feb. 16

Henderson attended TLA's 1999 Legislative Day, Feb. 23.
Sheila Henderson did a presentation at the Wesleyan Retirement Center on Feb. 24.
Sheila Henderson attended a G.I.V.E. meeting on Feb. 25 to discuss promoting
volunteerism in Georgetown.
PROGRAMMING
Ninth grade students made use of the career materials the library received as part of a
grant from VGM Corporation. The books were reserved for in -library use for several weeks
while the students worked on career -related research projects.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteers from AARP and VITA (Volunteers in Tax Assistance) are at work in the
meeting room on Wednesdays and Saturdays, helping people prepare their income tax returns.
This valuable service brings many people into the library, raises our profile in the community,
and results in many new library members.
Members of Latinos Unidos, a service fraternity at Southwestern University, have been
providing homework help in the children's room several afternoons each week, from 4 to 5 p.m.
STAFF
Ruby Izar-Rocha, a former evening staffer, has rejoined us while Cristy McNicholas is
on maternity leave. Ruby is covering the front desk during the afternoons so that Judy Fabry can
take care of Cristy's work. Lisa Jackson turned in her resignation, effective March 10. Her
husband has accepted a position in another state. When Lisa leaves, Ruby will take over her
afternoon duties in the children's room.
GRANTS
The library finally received notification of funding of its a -rate grant for 1998. Under
this federal program, the library will be reimbursed 50% of its cost for telephone service from
March 1998 through January 1999, and will have to pay GTE only 50% of billings from
February through June 1999. The library has already applied to extend this discount to June
2000.
FUTURE PLANS r r r
Library Foundation Gala is scheduled for March 6,1999.
Public Library Association Annual Conference will be in Chicago, March 24-27.
Texas Library Association Annual Conference will be held in Dallas, April 21- 24.
C.T.L.S. Regional Long Range Planning Meeting will be held May 13-14. Location
TBA.
Board/Foundation/Staff Retreat is slated for June 4-5. Location TBA.
