The event netted approximately $13,000 to benefit the library. During April the Foundation board agreed to fund the following projects: Microfilm of the Williamson County Sun, $5100 Performances for the Summer Reading Program, $500 Video camera for the library, $900 Share of Foundation/Advisory Board/Staffretreat on June 4 and 5, $200 Public access to the Internet finally became a reality in early March. Two terminals are available and are in use much of the time that the library is open. Demand is especially high after 4:00. Users may print from these terminals at a cost of $.10 per page. CyberPatrol, the filter that runs on these terminals to block objectionable sites, is updated daily. Most users are happy with the Internet service and the staff is managing the increased work load successfully. Other technological progress during March: completion of the switch from "dumb terminals" to PCs for the circulation desks and for the public access catalog. Also, the library's new server, which is separate from the City's network, is now working. The entire Dynix system was down for several days while the server was being installed and software was being upgraded, but it has run smoothly since that time. The Georgetown Area United Way awarded the library $13,850 for the purchase of microfilm reader -printer. STAFF - Out and About! Lee Sparks and Sheila Henderson are attending a city sponsored Leadership Development Training Session each Tuesday. The sessions began March 23 and will continue through May. Sheila Henderson attended the Public Library Association's Symposium held in Chicago, March 24-26. Sheila Henderson, Eric Lashley, Craig Dowell, and Lee Sparks attended the Texas • Library Association Conference in Dallas, April 20-23. Sheila Henderson was appointed to the Texas Cancer Data Center Advisory Committee and attended her first meeting on April 29 in Houston. VOLUNTEERS On April 16, during National Library Week, the staff put on an appreciation luncheon for library volunteers. About 20 volunteers attended. They received certificates, gifts, and were treated to an Elvis sighting. Laurie's catered the event, and a great time was had by all. Money from book sales financed this event. STAFF Several staff positions have changed during the past month. Judy Fabry, who has been a member of the public services staff for more than five years, was promoted to Library Services Assistant. She will assist the director and handle most of the library's writing projects. Maria West's position in public services was upgraded from part-time to full-time, partly to make up for the loss of Judy at the front desk and partly so that she can take over the children's room responsibilities weekday afternoons. Daniel Roblez, who has been working evenings and weekends since last fall as a temporary part-time staff member, then moved into the permanent part-time position vacated by Maria. FUTURE PLANSW C.T,L.S. Regional Long Range Planning Meeting will be held May 14 at Pflugerville Community Library. The Library Advisory Board will present information to Council, Tuesday, May 25.
