MAIN STREET ADVISORY BOARD MEETING MINUTES
4:30 P.M. – FEBRUARY 16, 2006
PARKS & RECREATION ADMINISTRATION BUILDING
Board Members Present: Gordon Baker, chair; Dianne Painter, Sarah Jane
Blankenship, Laura Eliel, Kirk Kriegel,
Board Members Absent: Francisco Choi, Marsha Farney, Cindy Locke and
Larry McCormick
Guests Present: Terri Brisse, Dana Wood, Beverly Adam, Trey
McLendon, Partrick Snyder and John Gamble
City Staff Present: Shelly Hargrove, Main Street Manager; Cari Miller,
CVB Coordinator
1. Called to order at 4:30 p.m. by Chair Gordon B.
2. Sarah Jane presented the Texas Historical Commission’s 25th Anniversary
poster for the Main Street Program. The Williamson County Sun newspaper
attended to do an article on it.
3. New Board members were introduced: Terri Brisse, Dana Wood and Beverly
Adam. Shelly discussed protocol of regular meetings.
4. Cari discussed the Red Poppy Festival, details included to explain to new
board members.
a. Date: April 29‐30, 7th year of Red Poppy Festival, this year will have
an American muscle car show.
b. Cari explained who are the festival sponsors and how this money is
raised for the façade fund and that we generally bring in about

$20,000. For example, vendor booths raise most of the money with
10’X10’ booths @ $150.
c. Dana Wood volunteered to contact realtors in Georgetown for
future funding.
d. Cari & Shelly discussed publications they advertise in: TX Events,
TX Highways, etc. Cari explained who performs (local & paid
entertainers) and where they perform.
e. Cari will bring a sign up sheet closer to the event date to volunteer
during the Red Poppy Festival for various shifts and duties.
5. Minutes from the January 10, 2006 board meeting were reviewed. Kirk made
a motion to accept, Dianne seconded. All in favor, none opposed.
6. Staff Report: Shelly Hargrove
a. Kudos was received from the Williamson County Sun newspaper
for the new paint schemes on the Visitor’s Center and City offices.
b. Arbye Curtis is the new intern for Main Street and Convention &
Visitor’s Bureau. His area of expertise is journalism/writing. He
will be involved with the updating of the visitgeorgetown.com
website
c. We have new lapel pins and new bags with the Georgetown logo
on them.
d. We have an advertisement in TX Events Calendar & an
advertisement in Celebrate Austin. We have our first co‐op
billboard with Texas Brazos Trail. Williamson County Historical
Museum and San Gabriel Motor Court are depicted
e. New “Seen the Signs” Texas Heritage Trails rack card was passed
out to board members
f. Shelly discussed the budget and upcoming dates as listed on the
staff page. For example: Historic Preservation has $10,000 from
HOT taxes, but must be applicable to putting heads in beds. Shelly
discussed the money for the façade fund and our hopes of getting

more from the City. There will be a mid‐year (March or April)
workshop where we will ask for more money. Accounting said we
have more money in facade fund than we thought and that there
might possibly be $10,000 available. Shelly will find out definite
amounts and tell us next meeting
g. An email will be sent out for possible retreat dates for all to agree
on and to ask if anyone wants to take chair, vice‐chair, secretary
positions, nominate yourself or others
7. Façade Grant Applicant: John Gamble presented his project at 824 Austin
Ave. for a new color scheme. John Gamble left after his presentation and
board discussed options.
a. Discussion on James Parker’s grant application about the
possibility of having had the roof already paid for with an
insurance settlement, but also received Main Street Facade Funds.
The board wants to add a clause to the facade fund along the line of
project work will be eligible for a Facade Fund grant if no money
has come from another source or that the building owners will own
the building for more than three years. Shelly/Gordon will inquire
wit the city attorney to see what we can do.
b. Regarding the decision on John Gambles project: $2231.89 will be
granted for the new color scheme, the amount subtracts the $900
for the travel and stay of employees from Houston. Kirk moved to
accept, Laura second, all approved.
8. Design: Sarah Jane Blankenship
a. The progress of the mural project to go on the side of the Visitor’s
Center was explained and tentative dates were announced for May.
Possible mosaic mural community project for the Red Poppy
Festival was discussed.
9. Economic Restructuring:
a. Kirk Kriegel discussed the Southwestern University family event
this weekend; any can help if they want. (February 18‐19)

b. Gordon Baker talked to Randy Morrow about a presentation to
target specific businesses. An example was explained from Denton
where they paid $35,000 for recruiting research and a few years
later all of it pretty much happened. Our goal is to bring one or
two stores downtown that people here would go to everyday to
create more foot traffic.
10. Promotion: Laura Eliel
a. Laura brought up the idea of a black tie event in July/August to
raise money. She explained it was a slow time and an event during
this time would be good. Questions were brought up about the
heat. A suggestion was made to have an ice cream social instead
and tie it in with the Games of Texas to go on in July.
