A. Chair Charles Aguillon called the meeting to order at 5:34 p.m.
B. There were no announcements regarding upcoming events.
C. There were no citizens wishing to address the Board.
D. Steve moved to accept the minutes of the November 16, 2010 meeting as distributed. Philip
seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
E. Consideration of and possible action on
1. Southwestern University/3M grant, art selection committee - Charles Aguillon Charles asked
Dar to explain the process by which the selection committee arrived at a decision. Dar
explained that the price limitation and the subject of the sculpture were important
considerations in choosing Marla Ripperda's piece, Horatio II (a somewhat fanciful
interpretation of a Texas horned toad). Steve moved to accept the choice of the selection
committee and Dar seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Dar will talk with.
Marla about details relating to the purchase of the piece.
2. Georgetown Sculpture Tour article in the View - Karen Lange. Karen reported that the article
will appear in the January issue of the View and she thanked Dar for his help with the article.
the pieces that will be featured are Horatio II, the Distortionists, the rhinoceros, and one of Herb
Long's pieces. The article will be mostly photos with a small amount of text.
3. Grant final reports and grant process - Charles Aguillon, Judy Fabry. Judy passed out a letter
from Mickie Ross, expressing her regrets that the Museum's final report was so late. Judy said
that all reports were inand that most were in the correct format. The lessons learned from this
round of grants was to make clear in the application that final reports that are not submitted in
the correct format will count against future grant applications. Smce that point was not made
in this year's application, the Board will not be able to deduct points from the next round of
applications (if there is one) for poorly written final reports. The report of the Friends of the
Georgetown Symphony Society should be used as a model of what is expected in the future.
4. Art Works banners at the 9th Grade Center/public recognition — Charles Aguillon. Charles
asked for the Board's support for a public reception at the 9th Grade Center, probably in late -
January or early February, to recognize the work of the banner artists and to show off how the
banners are now being used. He believes the school district can do the advertising and that he
can find donors for cookies and punch. Steve moved to give the Board's support to this
project; Philip seconded the motion, which passed unanimously.
5. Selection of one of Wes Odell's photographs to add to City art collection — Judy Fabry. Judy
reported that the staff had voted for their favorite photographs and Have You Been Here, a
photograph of bluebonnets in a rural location, had received the most votes. The photograph
was brought into the room to show to the board. Philip moved to accept the donation and Dar
seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. Judy said she would contact Mr. Odell to
tell him the Board's decision.
6. Possible budget allocation at mid -year — Charles Aguillon. Charles reported that Eric had
heard from Paul Brandenburg that it is possible that the Board may receive $40,000 at mid -year
(March 2011) if sales tax revenues continue to be high. Charles also said that he had heard
organizations that received grants last year may be going directly to the Council with requests
for funding for this year.
7. Request by Heather Brewer, urban forester, to fund chainsaw sculpture — Judy Fabry. Judy
said Heather Brewer had contacted her about the possibility of the Board funding a chainsaw
sculpture from one of the pecan stumps that are left in the Bark Park. Ms. Brewer said that the
artist she'd contacted, Doug Moreland, told her that pecan does not last long outdoors and that
he recommended any sculpture made from the stumps should be placed indoors. Ms. Brewer
thinks that the Recreation Center would be a good place for such a sculpture.
The Board discussed the project briefly and decided to recommend that Dar visit with Ms.
Brewer and see the stumps. Suggestions that came up included inviting another artist(s) to give
a bid and that possibly the Parks Department could trade additional wood for a single
sculpture.
7. Application for Cultural District Designation — Charles Aguillon. Charles had nothing new to
report on this subject.
8. Schedule for future meetings — Judy Fabry. The consensus was that the time and date for the
January meeting is satisfactory with most of the board members.
