HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 082713-S - Facilities Native LandscapingRESOLUTION NO. 0 8 a 1 13 -S A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, DIRECTING THE EXCLUSIVE USE OF NATIVE AND DROUGHT RESISTANT LANDSCAPING TO BE PLANTED AT ALL NEWLY CONSTRUCTED OR REHABILITATED CITY FACILITIES. WHEREAS, the rules of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), through the Texas Administrative Code, Title 30, Chapter 288 encourage the adoption of rules and ordinances for landscape water management and any other method of achieving the stated goals of an approved Water Conservation Plan; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown Charter requires a conservation and environmental resources element to the City's comprehensive plan with the intent to preserve the city's natural resources through conservation, protecting its unique character, and fostering its economy; and WHEREAS, the City recognizes that utilizing drought -tolerant plants that are native to Georgetown and the surrounding area reduces water demand from landscapes, without a dedine in landscape quality or quantity, and returns the city to its natural beauty; and WHEREAS, it is critical to Georgetown's economic and environmental health that the City provide leadership to both the private and public sectors in the area of sustainable landscaping; and WHEREAS, the City finds that establishing a standard for planning, designing, installing, maintaining, and managing water efficient landscapes in new and rehabilitated City facilities promotes the values and benefits of native landscapes, while recognizing the need to manage water and other resources as efficiently as possible; and NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, THAT: SECTION 1: From this day forward, the City will meet sustainable landscape standards by planting only native, low-water use plants at all new and rehabilitated City facilities. SECTION 2: This Resolution shall be effective upon approval by the City Council of the City of Georgetown. The Mayor is hereby authorized to execute, and the City Secretary to attest thereto ilus resolution on behalf of the City of Georgetown.
