ABSENT: Charles Aguillon STAFF IN ATTENDENCE: Sheri Miklaski —Assistant Library Director OTHERS IN ATTENDENCE: None F__TC1# I, • Minutes of last Meeting: The meeting was called to order by Chair Linda Nix at 6:30 PM. David Ciambrone made the motion to accept the minutes of the April 2013 Library Advisory Board meeting and Bill Hammonds seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. • Citizens wishing to address the Board: None • Director's Report Assistant Director Miklaski announced the volunteers of the year that were recognized on April 24 at the Library's Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon included: Colin Johnston, Janet Liem, Mary Somol, and Peg Ziegler. Miklaski also mentioned the nice retirement party the library staff held for Earlene Scott. Miklaski announced that a number of staff members attended the Texas Library Association Conference in Fort Worth. She told the board about a number of the sessions she attended. Miklaski read the patron comments. There was discussion concerning the complaint about the Cosmopolitan and Time magazines. Miklaski reviewed the monthly statistics with the board: Circulation was slightly higher than the previous year with 44,749 checkouts. Visitations were down for the month of April, but our door counter was broken, so the accuracy of those statistics is questionable. OverDrive e-book usage was up-- 873 checkouts, audio books checkouts-- 163. Wowmobile circulation was up again at 2,313. Miklaski noted events for the Georgetown Reads selection One Amazing Thing by Chitra Divakaruni will be held May 13-18. Upcoming Events: Hill Country Author Series — Karen Valby author of Welcome to Utopia, Notes from a Small Town on Wednesday, May 15. Miklaski reported that the Anderson High School Jazz Band will be performing on Sunday, May 19. Consideration of and possible action on the following: 1. Library Budget 2013-14 — Sheri Miklaski: Miklaski announced the only budget increase for the library will be in salaries, due to the compensation study the City completed last year. 2. Public Information Video — Sheri Miklaski: Miklaski screened the video produced by Matt Graves for the library pro bono. This video will be shown on the City's website, the library's website, YouTube, and Channel 10. 3. Library Staff Openings — Sheri Miklaski: Sheri announced Debra Scott has taken the Library Aide position once held by Earlene Scott and Melissa Mote has been hired as our new Teen Librarian. Melissa is graduating from the University of Texas School of Information and has an undergraduate degree from Cooper Union College. Miklaski announced Kathleen Bowling will be retiring at the end of May. 4. Little Library Project — Sheri Miklaski: Miklaski gave a handout explaining the Little Free Library project nationwide. She explained that this is a project that would be organized by the Friends of the Library and the City's Arts and Culture Board. There was a lot of discussion about how the Little Free Libraries would be organized. There was concern about vandalism. There was also concern that the library may need to create some distance from the project, so that the library isn't responsible for the repair of the Little Libraries if damaged. There was agreement it would be desirable for neighborhood organizations to partner with the Friends to make this project a success. 5. Georgetown Writer's College — David Ciambrone: Ciambrone gave an overview of how the Writer's College worked in the past in coordination with the San Gabriel Writer's League. The Writer's College is classes available to the public to learn how to write better and how authors sell their works. He listed the courses being offered in the fall, which will be taught by published authors. Board members asked questions about cost of classes, times of classes, and age ranges of the students. 6. Dates of future board meetings — Sheri Miklaski: A number of board members had conflicts with future meeting dates. After much discussion the board suggested moving the meeting to the third Monday of the month. Tom Hagen made the motion to cancel the July meeting and schedule the Library Advisory Board meetings for the 3rd Monday of the month at 6:30 PM starting in June 2013 and Lois Case seconded the motion. The motion passed unanimously. Chair Linda Nix adjourned the meeting at 7:15 P.M. Respectfully submitted, Margaret hompson, Secretary Linda Nix, Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY April 2013 HIGHLIGHTS • Staff honored the library's volunteers at a luncheon on April 24. Kathleen Bowling, the library's volunteer coordinator, organized and catered the event, which about 60 volunteers attended. Individuals who were honored for their work included Colin Johnston for his help with book processing, Janet Liem and Mary Somol , each of whom have been shelving books for more than 10 years, and Peggy Ziegler, who helped Community Outreach Librarian Michele Harber conduct the first bookmobile inventory. • Quinn Henderson's watercolors and acrylics were on display in the galleries during April. Zero Hour, a duo playing accordion and harp guitar, entertained with Latin American dance music on Sunday, April 21. • Earlene Scott's retirement party took place after hours in the library lobby on Friday, April 19. In addition to the regular staff, a number of former staff members and volunteers came to wish her well and enjoy the party. • The YA librarian position was readvertised after the first round of applicants failed to produce a viable candidate. Interviews were underway at the end of the month. • Interviews of candidates for the open technical services position (part-time) also began at the end of the month. STAFF ACTIVITIES: • Sheri Miklaski, Sally Bernier, Bethni King, and Brenna Normann were in Fort Worth April 23-27 to attend the annual conference of the Texas Library Association. • On April 29, Eric Lashley attended the first of three sessions of long-range and strategic planning by the administrators in the Downtown and Community Services Division. PATRON COMMENTS FOR APRIL Patron Comment: I bring my kids here a lot and I don't appreciate a risque Cosmopolitan magazine is on display as is Time magazine not 1, but 2 issues —1. Guys kissing 2. Lesbians kissing. Pleased keep this library kid friendly. (Patron is referring to the Time magazine issue about Gay Marriage). Patron Comment: A wireless printer would be helpful to phone and laptop users. Patron Comment: Translated from Spanish — Thank you for being so friendly and welcoming to Spanish speakers. Gloria Powers is very helpful translating materials for me. I appreciate the Spanish language collection. Patron Comment: The tax volunteers are so nice. You can have a fun conversation with them. Patron Comment: The Library, it's the best thing in Georgetown, really. Patron Comment: Please have all keyboards professional cleaned with professional cleaner. Screens, mouse, keyboards, etc. Patron Comment: The head of the library is really nice. Patron Comment: Library staff needs to clean/disinfect keyboards on all computers, including mouse and all desk areas.
