GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY October 2002 HIGHLIGHTS • As the first step in City Manager Paul Brandenburg's restructuring of the City organization, the library director now reports directly to the city manager and attends all division -level meetings. • The laptop computers that the library received through the TIF Community Network Grant went into use on October 16. People must sign use and liability agreements before they can use the laptops, then they can either use their library card or a special laptop check-out card when they come in again. The process seems to be working well and people are enjoying using the wireless equipment. • Most of the books purchased with the 2001 Texas Book Festival Award have been cataloged and processed and are ready for check=out. The library received $2500 for college and career materials. • The Georgetown Library Foundation received a $50,000 grant for the library from the Dell Corporation. It will provide a half-time contract staff person to be the Public Technology Coordinator for two years. The purpose of the grant is to increase computer use by people aged 14-18. The coordinator will develop programs and classes to appeal to young people as well as other age groups. This person also will handle the public computer check -in process, help those who need instruction in using the computers, and maintain the hardware associated with the public computers. • Although repairs had been made in September, the roof leaked again during the long period of rain this month. STAFF ACTIVITIES Rosa Garcia, children's services coordinator, was the speaker in the Spanish -language version of the videotape about the City issues that would appear on the ballot in November. Eric Lashley and Sarah Samson attended the District 3 TLA meeting in Round Rock on October 19. Sarah had been treasurer of the district for the past year. Eric attended meetings of Around Georgetown (the new name for the community network financed by the TIF grant) Helping Hand, and Georgetown Plus during this month. VOLUNTEERS • The annual membership meeting of the Friends of the Georgetown Library was held Tuesday, October 8. Approximately 20 people attended. Plans were made for the membership drive in February, a booth at the Red Poppy Festival in April, and a book sale in May. Although a location for the sale must still be found, a place to store the books that are collected has been secured. Faith Johnson is the acting president since Karli Hohlstein's resignation. • The library volunteers met October 11 to discuss issues that affect all of them. The volunteer coordinator, Judy Johnston, plans to have meetings like this at least twice a year. Latinos Unidos once again sponsored the children's Fall Party on October 30. It was held in or the Children's Room from 6-8 p.m. and was well -attended. 0 GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY Comparative Fiscal Year Statistics 2002 Oct Nov Dec Annual Total Patron Visits Current Year 17509 17509 2001-2002 17185 15144 11835 206478 2000-2001 18889 13893 11335 183296 (seem"betow 1999-2000 14497 12930 12008 184425 regard nq trattc eo s#s} Circulation 2002 Current Year 28599 28599 2001-2002 27339 22579 19706 330503 2000-2001 23448 21099 20707 322238 1999-2000 20744 21590 17143 276453 FY 2002-2003 Statistics Children's Programs Annual Total Attendance n/a 0 Programs 1 1 Story Time 8 8 Other (Tour, Movies, Crafts) nla 0 Home Schod Crows n/a 0 After Sdad Programs n/a 0 Other Services ILL Ordered 28 28 ILL filled 22 22 Lg Print Circuit 150 150 Sun City 59 59 Internet Usage 1663 1663 Reference Transactions 768 768 Volunteer Hours Adult 283.25 283,25 Teen 7.00 7.00 Community Service 20.50 20 50 Total 310.75 0.00 0.00 310.75 Registrations City Residents -new 110 110 GISD Kids' Cards 24 24 Non -residents -new 31 31 Non -residents -renew 73 73 Total 238 0 0 238 Cash Receipts Fines/Misc.
