The meeting was called to order by Linda Nix at 6:30 p.m. Ruth Lawrence moved that the minutes for June be
accepted and the motion was seconded by Ruth Anne Mallory. The motion was passed unanimously.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
Eric Lashley announced the passing of Dixie Hanna. Dixie, a city employee for twenty years and the only person on the
library staff who had worked at all three City library buildings, died Tuesday night of a heart attack. Until a few years
ago, when other staff members began selecting media materials, Dixie selected all of the adult books, audios, and videos
that the library purchased. Dixie continued to work on her book orders until she left work yesterday. The Georgetown
Public Library will be closed on Saturday morning to allow library staff to attend the memorial service for Dixie.
He also advised the board members of upcoming events at the library. He also provided the following information:
·Library activities were up for August.
·On October 2nd Fish City Restaurant in Georgetown will donate 15% of sales to Friends of the Library.
·The Harry Potter Party on July 21st was heavily attended.
·Credit card usage started in June and is running about $1000 a month.
·The library budget, which includes an increase of $10,000 in the book budget and more money for staff training and
supplies, has been approved by the City Council. The City budget also includes $250,000 to begin planning for
improved downtown parking.
·Director Lashley introduced new staff member Richard Groves. Richard explained his duties and his background.
·Director Lashley advised the board that he had received a complaint from a patron about the cover of a book that
was on a display shelf. He attempted to contact the patron about the matter but was unable to reach the person. He did,
however, leave a message giving his decision that the book would remain on the shelf.
·Director Lashley described some of the recent building issues and how they will be corrected. They included:
Air conditioning problems
Paint for the classroom
A/C duct sweating
Flooring replacements
·Dixie Hanna’s family members asked the public to donate memorials to the library and the Director advised that the
monies from the donations would possibly be used to install a stained glass window in the library
·The director discussed with the board his possible clothing standards for staff.
Judy Johnston provided information on the activities of the CTLS.
In a continuation of the monthly “board member introduction period,” Ruth Anne Mallory gave members a brief
biography.
Member Allison Dolan-Hanna moved that the September meeting be adjourned. P.J. Moore seconded the motion. The
motion was carried unanimously at 7:52 p.m.

MINUTES:
The meeting was called to order by Chair Linda Nix at 6:30 p.m. Stephanie Sorensen moved
and P.J. Moore seconded acceptance of the minutes of the April meeting. The motion passed
unanimously.
DIRECTOR'S REPORT:
Monthly Statistics: Statistics were up. The door counters for the official patron count were
installed April 20, 2007 but it was discovered that they were positioned at too high a level to
count children. Since children make up a large number of library visitors, the counters will be
lowered as soon as possible. The patron counters are on the door of the coffee shop as well.
Card registration is going up and will climb during the Summer Reading Program.
The large, new recycle bin that is in the parking lot is getting a lot of use. It is a general
collection point for white paper recycling and solves the library's problem of storing the used
paper until it could be taken to a recycle bin. There is some possibility that Texas Disposal
Systems is going to use the library as a test site to pick up plastic and glass. As of now that is
not done at commercial locations. The Red Poppy Coffee Shop would be able to recycle the
glass and plastic used there and the library's use of that service might inspire other businesses
to do the same.
The Friends' Second Hand Prose bookshop has expanded. The Hill Country Lecture Series,
which recently featured Austin author Karen McInerney, was an enormous success attended
by 180 guests. She was a humorous, interesting speaker and the scones, brownies and
blueberry coffee cake recipes from her book translated deliciously into the real thing .
Employee Activities: The library will be hiring two new positions soon. Positions for a
Reference Librarian and a Public Services Librarian are to be filled.
Upcoming Events: Kris Liem will speak at the library about her career as a film editor
Wednesday, May 16, at 6:30 p.m. She is a three-time Emmy Award winner and has done much
documentary film-making for PBS, the three major networks, HBO, A&E and the History
Channel.
On Thursday, May 17, 2007, the Williamson County Art Guild will open a show at the library.
The Guild donated a portion of the cost of the art hanging system that is in use in the library.
The Summer Reading Program begins June 1, 2007. Sara Hickman will be performing at the
kick-off. The Rotary Club of Georgetown is giving the Library $5,000 for the program and will
be a sponsor next year as well .
Director Lashley showed the Board the new update of the library's web site. The slide show, a
virtual tour throughout the Library, guided by four Peeps, was humorous and informational.
The link is expected to be up by the end of this week.
INTRODUCTION OF NEW BOARD MEMBER:
Eric Lashley introduced, and the Board welcomed, Allison Dolan-Hanna.
CLARIFICATION TO CHANGE SECTION 2.9 OF THE BY-LAWS:
Eric Lashley reported that the City Attorney explained that the ordinance will stand as written.
Ruth Anne Mallory then moved to accept Section 2.9 of the By-Laws as written. Stephanie
Sorensen seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
PARKING:
Chair Linda Nix's letter regarding the parking problem around the library was sent to Mayor
Gary Nelon. It is hoped, and expected, that a new parking facility funded by the County and
the City will receive attention in the upcoming budget.
OTHER BUSINESS:
A new contract is being written for janitorial service for the Library for six days out of the
week.
New directional signage of many types will begin to show up in the Library soon to help
patrons more easily find the places they are seeking in and around the Library .
Ruth Anne Mallory moved to adjourn the meeting. Allison Dolan-Hanna seconded. The
motion carried unanimously.
Respectfully Submitted,

Section 1.2B – the “s” shall be dropped in the word “challenges” in the second line

across 8th Street from the library.

MINUTES:
The meeting was called to order by Chair Judy Johnston at 6:30 p.m. Linda Nix moved and Ruth
Ann Mallory seconded that the minutes of the December meeting be approved as distributed. The
motion passed unanimously.
PRESENTATION OF CHECK BY PEDERNALES ELECTRIC COMPANY
Jennifer Lange and Thomas Castillo presented a check for $1000 to show how much the
Pedernales Electric Company appreciates all efforts the library does for the community. Eric
Lashley and Judy Johnston accepted the check. The library director and the board thanked
Pedernales Electric for their support.
PRESENTATION BY FINANCE DIVISON ABOUT BUDGET PROCESS FOR 2007-08
Eric Lashley handed out the “2007/08 Budget Process Memorandum” to all members of the
board. He asked them to fill it out and to return it as soon as possible. The City Council will
choose financial priorities from the results of the survey.
DIRECTORS REPORT:
The old library closed December 23, 2006. On January 3, 2007, the move started into the new
library that was still under construction. All collection materials had been moved by January 12.
During this period most of the furniture arrived, but there is still some furniture missing (Texas
History Room, Young Adult area). Ruth Lawrence suggested having a special opening for the
Texas History Room.
The fundraiser party on January 13, 2007, was “a real blast” (Eric Lashley). Several bands and
plentiful food ensured things went very well.
The move of the Second-Hand Prose Bookstore (SHP) of the Friends of the Georgetown Public
Library had to be pushed back due to an ice storm.
The opening of the new library has been a big success. Even though the weather hindered parts
of the ceremony, the citizen of Georgetown were eager to explore the new building. The bad
weather did not allow several parts of the opening program to take place, e.g. a marching band
and ceremonial book moving.
Eric Lashley expressed a big thank you to the volunteers. On the opening day they helped to
check-in and shelve around 5000 books. In return, patrons checked out over 3000 books.
Since the opening there has been one power outage and one sewage problem. But the main
complaint from patrons is the parking situation. Even though the new library has 89 parking
spaces in the back of building and 30 in front, many patrons are not able to find a space. The
parking spaces are not dedicated only for the library. So many merchants, employees of
surrounding businesses and visitors to the Square use the parking area. The library is considering
following options: (1) to let the City Council pass an ordinance or (2) to put up a sign or leave a
note on the windshield of the car. A question of who would enforce the ordinance was brought
up. Eric Lashley mentioned also that the City is considering a joint parking garage for four city
facilities at the corner of Martin Luther King, Jr. Street and Eighth Street.
The SHP is doing quite well. Eric answered Ruth Lawrence’s concern that the children’s books
are too expensive: the Friends will make some adjustments in the future.
The meeting rooms are very popular. Not only are organizations booking them, but also more
people attend the events. There is still one issue Eric has to address with the contractors. The PA
system for the two meeting rooms is not working the way it is intended. Instead of one system for
both rooms, there are two separate systems.
Additionally, the cleaning company is not able to keep up with the amount of work they face
every day, nor are they available to set up meeting rooms for users. The library director will
approach the City Council and argue for a full-time maintenance person.
In summary, the move has been smooth and stressful at the same time, which shows in the hours
the staff worked. The Library Advisory Board thanked Eric Lashley and his wonderful staff for
their time and commitment.
Billy Cryer (library assistant) and Rachael Pattillo (library assistant) joined the library staff.
Gretchen Pruett, the library’s assistant director, resigned to become the director of the new Hutto
Library.
INTRODUCTION OF LIBRARY STAFF MEMBER
Eric Lashley introduced Rachael Pattillo. The library assistant from Lubbock joined the staff
almost a month ago. She assists the public on the circulation and reference desk. In addition to
the job in the library, she studies art with a concentration on graphic art. After only a four-day
training period she jumped right in on opening day and was surprised by the friendliness of the
people and how busy the library was.
REPORT ON GEORGETOWN READS!
Carlton Stowers kicked off the 2007 Georgetown Reads! program on February 7, 2007. He spoke
about the book “Where Dreams Die Hard”, his career and his other books. Eighty-five spectators
enjoyed an entertaining evening. Hill Country Bookstore sold copies of his books, which he
signed at the end of the event.
REPORT ON CAPITAL CAMPAIGN
Eric Lashley reported that donors have contacted the campaign in January after the sneak peek
party and the opening. Even though checks still come in, the Library Foundation will wrap up the
campaign soon. The “High 5” campaign of the Friends ended with the opening of the library.
They collected over $22,000.
RESIGNATION AND REPLACEMENT OF JUDY PARKS AS CTLS REPRESENTATIVE
After ten years Judy Parks resigned as CTLS representative. In a letter she summarized all
experiences and the task. The board and Eric Lashley thanked Judy Parks for her service.
THANKS TO RETIRING BOARD MEMBERS
Judy Johnston announced that Sissy Lego-Pederson and she would retire from the Library
Advisory Board. Eric Lashley and the Board thanked both for serving on the board.
Linda Nix made a motion to nominate Judy Johnston to become the new CTLS representative.
Sissy Lego-Pederson second. The motion passed unanimously.
Eric Lashley added that the City Council changed the by-laws for boards. Every board will now
have only seven seats instead of nine.
Ruth Ann Mallory made a motion to adjourn. Linda Nix seconded. The motion passed unanimously.
Respectfully submitted,
Anja Lippincott, Secretary
Judy Johnston, Chair
