Ciambrone made the motion to accept the minutes of the November 2010 Library
Advisory Board Meeting and Glenn Mautner seconded the motion. The motion
passed unanimously.
DIRECTOR’S REPORT:
Sheri Miklaski read from notes from Director Lashley. Eric reported both circulation and
visitations were up from November 2009. Eric’s report also noted Internet usage was
7,736 for the month of November.
Sheri reported Rosa Garcia and Haley Denton had arranged for the music studio
located next to the Library to provide free guitar lessons for kids during the month of
December. She reported the Gingerbread contest voting would end December 14 and
encouraged board members to vote at the end of the meeting.
Sheri also reported there would be music program on Sunday, December 19 by the
Texas Rose Strings from 2 PM to 4 PM. She also noted the Friends of the Library
would be selling calendars on that day as well.
Sheri reported a number of changes were made to the Library’s website based on the
comments from board members at the November 2010 meeting. The New York Times
best sellers page is now dated, the blog articles now have a (...read more) at the end of
entries, the Library’s address and hours are at the top of the webpage, and the
databases are easier to find on the catalog page. Sheri noted there is a staff
committee meeting to make additional changes to the website.
Sheri announced the Library has selected Susan Mallory’s Already Home as the next
Georgetown Reads selection. She said a committee has been formed that is
considering having a wine tasting, walking tour, and a display of kitchen gadgets to
promote the book. The story takes place in Georgetown and features many stores and
restaurants located on the square.
Sheri noted the Library had success collecting toys for the Blue Santa project as well as
collecting canned goods for the Caring Place during the holiday season.
Sheri read aloud the patron comments for the month of November.
CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING:
1. Overdrive downloadable audiobooks – Sheri Miklaski: Sheri announced
OverDrive audiobooks would be available starting December 17. Sheri said that
staff had attended a number of training sessions on-line and Laura Evans,
cataloging librarian, provided training for other staff members. Sheri answered a
number of questions about the setup and how the program would work.
2.Bookmobile – Sheri Miklaski: Sheri reported Eric Lashley had met with City
Manager Paul Brandenburg, Judy Apel and Louise Beyer from the Friends of the
Library on November 19 to discuss the bookmobile project. Paul Brandenburg
was very supportive of the project and asked Eric to make a presentation to
Council in January to get approval to move forward. Board members asked
about the current position which is frozen and Sheri responded that Paul
supported “unfreezing” the position, but the decision would be made by City
Council. Shana asked about the Library position posted on the City’s website
and Sheri said the position was for a library assistant, due to the fact that Gail
Pruett had resigned from the library to take a position with Apple Computers.
3.Changes to website – Sheri Miklaski. Sheri reiterated a number of the
changes that have already been made to the library’s website, which were
discussed previously in the Director’s report, but asked the board members to
continue to let staff know if there were items that needed to be changed.
4.Schedule of future meetings – Sheri Miklaski: Board members did not need
to make any changes at this time to future meeting dates.
Chair Betty Ann Sensabaugh adjourned the meeting at 7:00 PM.

library for more than one month. She is a recent graduate of the University of Texas -
School of Information. Sheri has a background working with nonprofit organizations.
She grew up in Detroit, MI and is a graduate of the University of Michigan. The board

has created a new category of library materials for adult graphic novels. The
juvenile and teen graphic novels have become very popular and the staff had
received some graphic novels that were more for adults than teens. The staff
believed that books with adult themes should be located in the adult collection
and placed on the second floor of the library.
4.Bookmobile – Eric Lashley: Eric reported that representatives of the Friends
of the Library would be meeting with City Manager Paul Brandenburg to discuss
the possibility of starting a bookmobile program next fiscal year and to discuss
the possibility of “un-freezing” the current frozen position within the library’s
budget.
5.Board members’ input regarding library website – Eric Lashley: Using a
Proxima projector, Eric projected the library’s website onto the conference room
wall and asked board members to comment on what they felt needed attention.
Board members commented they wanted to be sure anything that appeared on
the front-page was current. Other comments:

·Blog articles need to have a (read more) button at the end of the text
instead of the (....)
·Staff e-mails should be clickable
·Contact Us information should be more visible
·Address of the library should be at the top of the page with the hours of
operation
·Databases should be easier to get to and used
·Database icons on the catalog page look like advertisements

visitations also were up.
Eric announced attendance for the teen summer reading programs had doubled this
summer.
Eric reported he attended the City Manager’s workshop on the budget and the library’s
budget would be the same as last year’s budget with one frozen position.
The patron comments were read aloud. The majority of the comments were very
positive.
Director Lashley announced that the Library and the Friends of the Library would
participate in a Book Fair at Sun City in August to promote library services and the
Friends organization.
Eric read portions of an article written by Marilyn Johnson that appeared in the Austin
American Statesman on July 9. The article pertained to the importance of libraries
during times of economic crisis and suggested that communities that invest in libraries
will come out of the economic crisis with a competitive advantage.
CONSIDERATION OF AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON THE FOLLOWING:
Overdrive downloadable audiobooks – Eric Lashley: Eric announced the
library has entered into an agreement to start a consortium with six other libraries
to purchase and circulate downloadable audiobooks. Georgetown will pay

Social networking and library website – Eric Lashley: Eric demonstrated the
City’s Twitter and Facebook pages for the board. Eric said a number of
residents now prefer to receive information via Twitter and Facebook and do not
use the City’s webpage. Eric announced the library plans to use this technology
more to promote our programs and services. There is no cost to use these
services and library staff already produce the content that will be posted on
Facebook and Twitter. He also announced patrons can now receive messages
concerning the availability of their reserves via text messages on their cellular
phones.
Art in the Library – Eric Lashley: Director Lashley reported the current policy

about removing library materials, displays and artwork would come to the Library
Advisory Board. After discussion, the board wanted to see a more formal
process in regards to accepting donated pieces of art for the library. Eric said he
thought it was important the Library Advisory Board should be made aware of

of the principles outlined in Colorado.

working with the information technology department to minimize disruption of

Library’s check-out periods – Eric Lashley: Director Lashley read responses

Library have formed a committee to determine whether it will be feasible to take
on funding a bookmobile for the library. Eric announced there were two major

a bookmobile program could be established is October 2012.
Library’s Technology Issues – Eric Lashley: Director Lashley notified the
Board the library will be receiving twelve new public computer stations this
month. He also reported the City is changing the framework of our computer
network from Novell to Active Directory. This transition may cause interruption of
library services in mid-February. Eric is working with the Information Technology
department to minimize disruption of library services. Eric also reported the
City’s telephone system is being upgraded and the Information Technology
department has indicated it wants the library to go to a menu system when
patrons call the library. After much discussion, the Board requested an item be
placed on the February agenda to discuss phone services in regards to customer
service.
