HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 990209-FF - Petition Public Library FundRESOLUTION NO. • • • 1 1. - - • • K. 1 WHEREAS, all Texas public libraries provide significant educational, cultural, economic, and social assets for the citizens they serve; and WHEREAS, increasing demands for library services and diminishing local resources have created a growing crisis in funding for Texas libraries; and WHEREAS, the current indirect aid the State of Texas provides to local libraries (26 cents per capita) is among the lowest in the nation; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has increased its support of its library significantly during the past five years, but still finds it difficult to meet the expectations of our community. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, THAT: SECTION 1. The facts and recitations contained in the preamble of this resolution are hereby found and declared to be true and correct, and are incorporated by reference herein and expressly made a part hereof, as if copied verbatim. The City Council hereby finds that this resolution implements the following policies of the Century Plan - Policy Plan Element: 1. Facilities and Services Focus End 4.3, which states: "Georgetown Public Library's information and collections are accessible to all citizens;" and 2. Facilities and Services Focus End 4.4, which states: "The Georgetown Public Library has a collection development budget which equals the national per capita for library expenditures in a comparable population category;" and 3. Facilities and Services Focus End 4.5, which states: "The Georgetown Public Library's resources are expanded through partnerships with a variety of organizations, including non - profit, corporations, governments, schools and community groups." SECTION 2. The City Council of the City of Georgetown supports amending the TexShare Program to allow public library membership in the TexShare library resource sharing network and supports petitioning the Texas Legislature so that funds may be Library Resolution No. Page 1 of 2 Pages appropriated sufficient to allow every resident of the state to benefit through their public library. SECTION 3. The Mayor is hereby authorized to execute, and the City Secretary to attest thereto this resolution on behalf of the City of Georgetown. SECTION 3. This resolution shall be effective immediately upon adoption. RESOLVED this day of 1999.
