A RESOLUTION DESIGNATING THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN,
TEXAS, AS THE RED POPPY CAPITAL OF TEXAS, AUTHORI-
ZING THE MAYOR TO SIGN AND THE CITY SECRETARY TO
ATTEST.
WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown has enjoyed the red brilliance of
the Flanders Field Red Poppies, in greater and lessor degrees depend-
ing on mowing schedules, rainfall, and other quirks of nature, since
World War I; and,
WHEREAS, the history of the Red Poppy's origin in our community
is established by 'Exhibits No. 1, 2, and 3,; and,,
WHEREAS, through the dedication of the Red Poppy Garden Club and
individuals, the propagation of Red Poppies is becoming both an orga-
nized and backyard effort of significant scale, resulting in a visual
impact which is a source of pleasure to Georgetown citizens and

WHEREAS, the striking presence of Red Poppies an our major traf-
fic ways and throughout the community can bring recognition for
Georgetown throughout the country; and,
WHEREAS, official recognition of thb,Red Poppy's uniqueness in
our community can only facilitate its general" acceptance and expan-
sion:
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF
GEORGETOWN, TEXAS;
That the City of Georgetown, Texas, shall be known henceforth as the
Red Poppy Capital of Texas;
That the Council recommends all Tourism, Chamber of Commerce, and Eco-
nomic Development materials include reference to this designation;
That all businesses and citizens be encouraged to plant, cultivate,
and maintain Red Poppies in visible areas in the City;

That. the City of Georgetown will make every effort to preserve and
protect the Red Poppies resulting from the seedings on -public lands
within the corporate limits by not mowing prior to -the Red Poppies
blooming or before the seeds are scattered approximately 30 days after
blooming.
That the Mayor be authorized to sign and the City Secretary to execute
this Resolution.
