HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_12.15.2014Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Advisory Board City of Georgetown December 15, 2014 The Library Advisory Board met on Monday, December 15, 2014 at 6:30 p.m. in the staff conference room of the Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street MEMBERS PRESENT: Michael Barnes, Stephanie BaInck, Lois Case, Tom Hagen, Linda Nix, Pete Rose and Margaret Thompson. Regular Session A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. None were present. B. Consideration of minutes of the November 17, 2014 meeting. — Lois Case made the motion to accept the minutes of the November 2014 Library Advisory Board Meeting. Pete Rose seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. C. Consideration of Library Director's report — Eric Lashley — Lashley reported circulation and visitations for the month of November were slightly down over the previous year. He reported bookmobile circulation was slightly up at 2,695 checkouts. OverDrive e -books checkouts were up with 1,578 checkouts of e -books and 430 checkouts of e -audio books. Lashley reported that the final inventory numbers, after double and triple checking the statistics, showed a loss rate of 2.4% for the five year period or .48% per year. Lashley reported that the Friends of the Library had recently given the Library $33,000 for library materials. $10,000 — OverDrive $5,000 — Bookmobile materials $8,000 — Fiction $2,000 — Grammy Music CDs $3,000 — DVDs $3,000 — Books on CD $2,000 — Young Adult materials Lashley announced that the library may close one day in February for staff training. Lashley reviewed with the Board options for website changes the City is considering. There were two options, The Good Life and Life In Balance. After much discussion, the board preferred The Good Life sample over Life in Balance. Lashley was going to relay the feedback from the Board to Erin McDonald, the City's Web Master. D. Report on new library catalog. — Eric Lashley — Lashley showed Board members the new catalog's features. Lashley explained there are still a few bugs that need to be worked out. The major issue is the system no longer remembers barcode and password information, so patrons have to enter it each time they want to view their accounts or place a reserve on an item. The other issue is the new catalog does not work when using the Internet Explorer web browser. E. Report on the "fine print" libra!y policies. — Eric Lashley — Lashley handed out a copy of the New Seasons Market's "Fine Print" policies. New Seasons Market is a grocery store chain in Portland, Oregon that is known for their exceptional customer service. Lashley had seen a write-up in the Library Journal and would like to adopt the "fine print" idea to our library. Lashley explained the staff was working on these fine print items. The idea is to let our patrons know what we will do to make their visit to the library exceptional. After much discussion, the Board approved the idea, F. Report on libra!y staff member changes. — Eric Lashley — Lashley reported that Lawren Weiss has officially taken the Administrative Assistant position. In addition, Toni Nietfeld has moved into Lawren's vacant full-time position. Lashley explained that the library will be hiring a Fine Arts Librarian very soon. Lashley also reported that the library will be promoting one of the current Library Assistants to become the volunteer coordinator for the library. G. Report on discussions of future branch location on the west side of 1-35 — Eric Lashley — Lashley reported that he was approached by a member of a subcommittee of the Pulte Amenities Committee for the expansion of Sun City. The committee member wanted to discuss the possibility of Pulte and the City working together to create a branch library on the west side of I- 35. There is land off of Shell Road owned by Pulte, as well as land fronting Williams Drive, Lashley told the subcommittee member that he was interested in continuing talks and would see what could be done to establish a branch library on the west side of Georgetown. H. Consideration of dates of future Board meetings - Eric Lashley — It was determined that the library 7 - will be closed on January 19 due to the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday. The Board will hold their next meeting the following day on Tuesday, January 20 at 6:30 p.m. in the library's staff conference room. Margaret Thompson, Secretary Linda Nix, Chair
