Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Advisory Board City of Georgetown December 14, 2015 The Library Advisory Board met on Monday, December 14, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. in the Staff Conference Room of the Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street MEMBERS PRESENT: Pat Baldwin, Michael Barnes, Lois Case, Tom Hagen, Tom Milburn, and Linda Nix. STAFF PRESENT: Eric Lashley- Library Director, Bethni King — Children's Services Librarian, Toni Nietfeld — Library Assistant — Children's Services and Sally Miculek — Assistant Library Director. Regular Session A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. — None were present. B. Consideration of minutes of the November 9, 2015 meeting. — Tom Hagen made the motion to accept the minutes of the November 2015 Library Advisory Board Meeting. Michael Barnes seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. C. Introduction of library staff member. — Eric Lashley. Lashley introduced Toni Nietfeld — Library Assistant, Bethni King — Children's Services Librarian, and Sally Miculek — Assistant Library Director to the board. Nietfeld and King demonstrated one of the Bots and Books laptops and a Lego robot children made at our Santa's Workshop event held on Saturday, December 12th. Nietfeld showed the Board how the robot was programmed to kick a snowball. Sally Miculek was then introduced to the board and talked about the Georgetown Reads project, the Of Mice and Men events, and our Wired Wednesday program with the 4-H Club. This year the library is partnering with the Ministerial Alliance to encourage everyone to read Bryan Stevenson's book Just Mercy about the criminal justice system. The Ministerial Alliance will hold a number of Courageous Conversations events at the library to encourage the community to discuss difficult topics such as race. The library will also be partnering with the Austin Opera to promote John Steinbeck's book Of Mice and Men. Events for Of Mice and Men include a film screening, book discussions, and a performance by some of the opera's cast members. Miculek informed the board that staff members, as well as teen volunteers from the 4-H Club, assist patrons with any computer issue on Wednesday afternoons. The teens and staff are offering computer software and application classes as well. The program has been very well attended. D. Consideration of the Library Director's Report. — Eric Lashley. Lashley reviewed November's statistics with the board. Visitations and circulation was slightly down compared to the previous year. Lashley reported that Suzette Davidson returned from medical leave and is doing well. Six library staff members were trained as passport acceptance agents in late November. The library should begin accepting passport applications in February. Beyond Wax is the title of December's art show in the library and the Austin Flute Project will provide live music on December 20. E. Report on City Council's goals and objectives. — Eric Lashley. Lashley passed out a draft of the City Council's new strategic goals and objectives (attached to these minutes). Lashley reported that Council had a number of visioning sessions and have begun to draft a new strategic plan for the new City Manager. F. Report on the Downtown West project and parking lot. —Eric Lashley. Lashley reported that City Council has approved moving forward with the first phase of the Downtown West Project, which includes remodeling the old library into a new City Hall building. The Georgetown Communications and Technology building will also be remodeled into a new municipal court facility. Lashley reported that as part of the project, the library's Red Poppy plaza will get a shade structure to make the space more usable during summer months. Lashley reported paving is complete on the new parking lot. The construction company was laying concrete bumpers in the lot during the board meeting. The lot contains 149 new parking spaces. G. Consideration of dates of future board meetings.
