The eco-friendly city offers a plethora of features beyond the scenic square as well. The town name was derived from the acquisition of the land from George Washington Glasscock to settle the community. Mr. Glasscock, known as the Donald Trump of his time, only had one condition: that the town be named after him. And so the city of Georgetown was born. Historical and culturally rich, Georgetown, shares its story through museums, entertainment venues, cultural events, festivals and a wide variety of dining establishments and should be on any traveler's list of must stop locations. The Red Poppy Festival, a musical celebration of spring, is held annually in April, and draws visitors from all over the state. The Williamson Museum is home to the historical exhibits of the county. Located in the former Farmer's State building, the museum maintained the integrity of the original structure by preserving the flooring, molding and original skylights. Uncharacteristic of many museums, the museum offers visitors, particularly for children, a hands-on experience including an old west chuck wagon kitchen and rotating art, photo, and historical exhibits. In the heart of the square sits the regal courthouse complete with Lady Justice atop the copper dome. As the county seat of Williamson County, the courthouse has been witness to countless historical events. Perhaps the most memorable was the legendary trial of then Ku Klux Klan leader Murray Jackson, in 1923, which resulted in the first successful guiltyverdict in Texas and forever changed the political stronghold of the organization. Throughout the parameter of the town square a collection of shops and restaurants await tourists. Home to the largest collection of intact vlctnrian buildings, business owners would order the store fronts from Mesker Bros., were delivered by train and then placed on the building facets. A stroll around the square is a testament to the city for maintaining the integrity of the city roots. The local business owners encourage and support each other's endeavors and I was awestruck by the outpouring of praise between proprietors. One common thread is the ghost stories. Apparently, several of the buildings have friendly ghosts and each October, Ghost Tours on the Square, celebrates these friendly town members. *these walls could talk I believe they would have some stories to tell. The Palace Theater opened its doors in 1925 as a silent movie show venue and continued operations until the large multiplex theaters in the late 80s became popular. A group of Georgetown citizen's purchased the building in 1990, and launched a capital campaign to restore the theater to the original majestic glory. The restoration was complete in 2000, and the Palace was once again a thriving part of the Georgetown cultural scene. Blending the past and integrating the new, the theater provides features for every patron including the special needs community offering indusion audio inscription for the blind and sign interpretation for the hard of hearing communities. Earlier this month in El Paso, the Poppies Fest was held to signal the arrival of the Mexican gold poppies lining the Franklin Mountains, and this weekend, Georgetown will host the 17th annual Red Poppy Festival. The story of how the red poppies came to this part of the world is pretty remarkable. An American stationed in Europe sent poppy seeds back home to his mom, in Georgetown. She planted them around her home, which is now 507 East 7th Street, and from there, the birds and the bees carried them elsewhere around town. Then in the eighties, the Red Poppy Garden Club, City of Georgetown, and Williamson County Sun joined the effort by starting to distribute poppy seeds. This led in 1990 to the Legislature declaring Georgetown the Red Poppy Capital of Texas. Of course, flowers alone hardlymake afestivalthat occurs over three days, which is why there is also live music, a classic car show, and BMX bikers performing fancy tricks. The artists Jeff Shore, from Houston, and Jon Fisher, from Dripping Springs, have turned that painful aural experience into sweet music with Drip Machine, an automated electro- hydraulic system that pipes out curious tunes. As each drip ofwater in four repurposed aquariums hits a corresponding sensor, pumps and valves help churn out sounds through twenty speakers. According to the artists' statement, Drip Machine embraces "the conflation of DIY aesthetics and visual technologies, the exploration of the relationship between automated and chaotic movement, and the spectator expectations about the cause -effect relation between image and sound." You can also immerse yourself in artjust by strolling around and appreciating the various public sculptures and artwork around town. This self -guided tour includes pieces along Main Street, San Gabriel Park, and the Georgetown Public Library. Upcoming events In addition to having the most charming town square, Georgetown is also known as the "Red Poppy Capital ofTexas."The city is one of the few places in the United States where red poppies grow naturally every spring, celebrated annually at the Red Poppy Festival. Happening this weekend (April 22 through 24), the vivid blooming of the flowers will coincide with a weekend of concerts, parades, contests, art, food, and family fun. Friday night, Dysfunction Junction will kick off the festival at 7 pm. The Paint Georgetown Red Parade starts Saturday morning at 10 am, and Saturday evening's headliner is country artist Tracy Lawrence. All festival events are free and open to the public. On the first Friday of every month, merchants in the town square stay open late for evening shopping and gallery hopping, with live music and other special events. In the summer, enjoy live music at the courthouse for the Music on the Square Summer Concert Series. All concerts are free and take place from 6:3o to 8:3o pm on Fridays in June, July, and August. Bring your chairs or blanket, and perhaps pick up dinner at a local restaurant to take with you. If you haven't discovered Georgetown yet, its proximity and varied selection of things to do elevate its appeal as a place to spend a day outside of Austin.
