HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_LAB_05.17.2016Minutes of the Meeting of the Library Advisory Board City of Georgetown May 17, 2016 The Library Advisory Board met on Tuesday, May 17, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. in the Small Conference Room of the Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street MEMBERS PRESENT: Pat Baldwin, Michael Barnes, Lindsay Cooper, Tom Hagen, Tom Milburn, Pete Rose, and Jonathan Sherwin. STAFF PRESENT: Eric Lashley- Library Director A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. — None were present. B. Consideration of the minutes from the April 19, 2016 Library Advisory board meeting. Pete Rose. Tom Hagen moved to accept the April 2016 minutes as distributed. Michael Barnes seconded the motion, which passed unanimously. C. Consideration of Library Director's Report. — Eric Lashley. Lashley reviewed April's statistics and events with the board, noting that library staff attended the Public Library Association and Texas Library Association's Conferences. Lashley shared the presentation he gave with librarians from Lake Travis, Southlake, and Coppell called, "Spinning Plates: Balancing the Budget as Collection Formats Multiply." Lashley also noted that Cienfuegos will return in June to perform in the Live Music at the Library series. The group last played at the library for the 50th Anniversary Gala in March. There will be a Dr. Seuss lecture by Gregg Philipson at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, May 18, in collaboration with the Dr. Seuss exhibit in the library. The Children's Services staff will put on a puppet show Saturday, May 21 at 3 p.m. During May the library will roll out a 2 new adult programs: Coloring Circle and Games for Grownups will each take place twice a month. Lashley read patron comments from the library's suggestion box. D. Strategic Plan Update overview. — Eric Lashley. Lashley shared a survey that the Anacortes Public Library (Anacortes, Washington) is currently using in the development of their strategic plan. Board members reviewed the questions and discussed how a similar survey could be used in Georgetown. Rose commented that the survey should be done both via the Internet and with paper copies. Hagen noted that the survey should consider features that libraries will have in the next 10 years and use the survey to educate and capture the evolution of libraries. Board members discussed future development of the City and discussed possible locations of a future branch library. Lashley offered to invite Sofia Nelson (Director of the City's Planning Department), to come and speak to the board about where future development will happen in the city and extra territorial jurisdiction. E. Consideration of future board meetings. — Eric Lashley. The next Library Advisory Board meeting will be Tuesday, June 21, 2016 at 6:00 p.m. Chair Rose adjourned the meeting at 7:20 PM. Respectfully submitted, f Lindsay Cooper Secretary Pete Rose Chair DIRECTOR'S MONTHLY REPORT GEORGETOWN PUBLIC LIBRARY May 2016 MAY- HIGHLIGHTS • May 1- lecture and book signing by Yvonne Ward -Hughes, author of The Red Handkerchief. • Georgetown ISD provided art from all schools up and down stairs for 2 weeks during May. The Waterloo Watercolor Group finished the month with a watercolor exhibit entitled, Sacred Spaces: The Artist's Landscape. This exhibit will be up through July 1. • Minnie and Ella Jordan provided live music on May 15 at 2 p.m. • May 21 the children's crew put on a puppet show celebrating Dr. Seuss in conjunction with the Dr. Seuss Wants You! exhibit. • Gregg Philipson presented on May 18 about the art & politics of Dr. Seuss. Philipson also loaned his collection of Dr. Seuss memorabilia to display at the library during the month. • Kristina Gonzales Zepeda was hired in April as a Cataloging Librarian. She has already helped the Technical Services department deplete some of the backlog the library has been dealing with. • Recurring programs such as Storytime, Wired Wednesday, Knitting Club, READ Dogs, Teen Advisory Board (TAB), and Fandomosity continue. PATRON COMMENTS for May 2016 1. Patron comment: Get a vending machine. 2. Patron comment: Make printing process easier. 3. Patron comment: The Spanish books are being shelved with EF. 4. Patron comment: Disregard previous comment about Spanish books in EF. 5. Patron comment: Carts — small like the ones at HEB — Bring in your used puzzles and let someone else take them home to keep or return. 6. Patron comment: Need Morningstar.
