HomeMy WebLinkAboutMinutes_CVB_07.28.2017Minutes of Meeting of the Convention & Visitors Bureau Board City of Georgetown, Texas July 28, 2017 The Convention & Visitors Bureau Board met on Friday, July 28 at 8:30 am at Convention and Visitors Bureau Office, located at 103 W. 7th Street, Georgetown, Texas. MEMBERS PRESENT: Georgene Richaud, Rita Healy, Karen Soeffker, Stephanie Blanck, Al Shankkle, Christy Fisher, Tauyna Vessels, STAFF PRESENT: Cari Miller, Kendal Buechler, Marie Woodard GUEST: None Regular Session 1. Chair Richaud called the meeting to order at 8:32 a.m. Legislative Regular Session 2. Discussion and possible action regarding approval of the June 9, 2017 minutes Motion by Healy, second by Fisher to approve the June 9, 2017 minutes. Approved 6-0 (Blanck abstained). 3. Discussion and possible action regarding The Best of Georgetown Contest Moderation Policy — Kendall Buechler • Discussion involved setting a policy to codify the rules of the contest for consistency. • Packet was presented to the board for review. • Key questions arose for further discussion: is the CVB the most appropriate host for this contest considering many of the categories are not tourism related. Motion by Richaud, second by Fisher to adopt the policy as recommended in the discussion and that all additional (new) categories must meet the criteria as noted in the policy (policy attached). Approved 7-0 4. Discussion and possible recommendation to approve a three year contract for sponsorship of The Daytripper with Chet Garner in the amount of $183,000 — Cari Miller • Data indicates that The Daytripper is the 3rd leading driver of how people hear about Georgetown. Season 8 aired in 47 states with 18,061 broadcasts. • The contract term will be from October 1, 2017 until September 30, 2020, payable annually (Year 1=$60,000, Year 2=$60,000, Year 3=$63, 000), with an option to renew for one additional year extending the contract until September 30, 2021 (renewal=$66,000). A multiple year contract will lock -in the rate and allow the CVB staff and Chet Garner to develop a long range marketing plan. Motion by Healy, second Vessels to recommend to the Georgetown City Council approval of a three-year contract for sponsorship of The Daytripper in the amount of $183,000. Approved 7-0 7/28/17 1 5. Discussion and possible action regarding Meetings/Conferences Incentive Grant Program — Cari Miller and Marie Woodard • Council has approved $20,000 for this grant program for the first year as it pertains to transportation of those holding conferences/meetings in Georgetown and staying at Georgetown hotels. • Discussion was held in regard to the requirements to be eligible for applying for the grant. • It was agreed that Miller and Woodard would obtain additional information from other cities that have such a grant program (such as Plano and Tucson) and will bring this to the Board on the August 1 lth agenda including application process and disbursement of funds. No action was taken. 6. Discussion and possible action regarding advertising and media exposure and dates of upcoming events— Cari Miller Miller provided current stain of the C v B's advertising and media activities. The C` B June Monthly Review is attached. No action was taken. Or maybe you're a biking enthusiast looking for new trails off the beaten path. No matter your experience level, here are to of the best biking trails around Austin. Roy and Ann Butler Hike and Bike Trail Where: Central Difficulty: Easy to moderate This downtown trail offers great views with an effortless ride. The path switches from a smooth boardwalk to a gravel trail, but both are easy to conquer. Take a leisurely pace as you tour the ro miles around Lady Bird Lake. The Veloway is 23 inches wide and a little over 3 miles around. Barton Creek Greenbelt Where: West Difficulty: Easy to vigorous With several entry points and unofficial trails crawling across the 7-mile stretch of greenery, you can easily traverse different areas each time you go. If you're just starting off, try the Loop 36o access point or the entry near Zilker Park. The Greenbelt is part of the Violet Crown Trail, an in -progress, 30-mile regional trail system. Walnut Creek Metropolitan Park Where: North Difficulty: Easy to moderate Most of these trails are long, winding paths looping around the entire park. The terrain here is varied, showcasing everything from grassy areas to wooded enclaves. This is a full-fledged park, so you can also find sports complexes, barbecue pits, picnic tables, a swimming pool, and more. Slaughter Creek Preserve Trail Where: South Difficulty: Easy to moderate Sharing a trail can be difficult, but the Slaughter Creek Preserve Trail has a clever solution: Bikers head clockwise and pedestrians walk counter -clockwise. A lot of open track means you can easily pick up speed — just keep an eye out. There's not much shade, so be prepared for sun. Brushy Creek Regional Trail Where: North Difficulty: Easy to moderate This 6.75-mile trail, alternating between concrete and stone, winds through several parks, each of which offers an opportunity to stop and hang out for a bit. Amenities include bathrooms, picnic tables, water activities, and more. A portion of the trail will be closed until June 30 (more info here). Goodwater Loop Where: Far north Difficulty: Moderate to vigorous Lake Georgetown promises quite the biking adventure. The 28-mile dirt loop in the San Gabriel River Trail does not have a lot of elevation, but there's a lot of ground to cover and greenery to explore. Feel free to stop for a swimming or fishing session at certain parts of the lake. It looked at poverty rate, monthly housing cost, medium income, housing appreciation rates, graduation rates, students taking the Advance Placement exams and percentage that got a 3 or above on those tests, percent of the population younger than 20, unemployment rate and crime rates How did Austin fare? Not on the list. But Leander, Round Rock and Georgetown are. Leander was No. 1. The study sites education opportunities: About 33 percent of students take at least one AP exam and 73 percent of those scored a 3 or higher. Georgetown was No. 8 for its growth in housing appreciation and growth of the city, but it does get dinged for having one of the highest property tax rates. Round Rock was No. 9 for having the second lowest housing costs in the Top 10, and for its graduation rates and education achievements. From the striking Hamilton Pool to Georgetown Blue Hole Park, Central Texas is an oasis in the middle of a state with diverse terrain that will make you feel as if you're in paradise without even leaving. Texas summers are the perfect time to get out and explore the enchanting state. Here are five of the best local watering holes to visit on a sunny day: Georgetown's Blue Hole Park This watering hole along the south fork of the San Gabriel rivers sometimes falls off the radar, but county residents know that this is a true Central Texas gem. Its numerous access paints and proximity to Georgetown's town square make it a popular wading spat for students and residents alike, and there's ample room to hang out across the broad 40 yards. Picnic tables, bathrooms and a trail are available, but expect little shade as there are no trees to shelter you. Though it's tempting, cliff jumping is recommended only if you plan on running into Georgetown police. 100 Blue Hole Park. Open daily from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wimberley Blue Hole Regional Park Blue Hole is suited for those looking for some relaxation, seclusion and the perfect postcard getaway. The water is encompassed by a haven of arching trees al around, making it perfect for those wanting to float around sans sun. If you'd like to stray from napping the day away in a tube, the spot also comes equipped with rope swings. You can getyour inner Tarzan on by climbing some trees to swing from a chain link or by just jumping from the highest of treetops.
