Subject: Re: Commission on Aging - draft materials
Linda,
Thank you for getting an early start on the February agenda.
First, I think when any of our Commission members have stated
they have materials to present, we should make agenda items
of them to be perfectly transparent. If they are just making a
casual passing comment or followup to a previous presentation,
that can stay tucked under the general agenda item,'Priority
Initiatives'.
Ginny and I have discussed the Initiatives and agree that come
March and the new board year we should re -visit the Initiatives as
to their current relevance, then address who wants to work each.
As you are well aware, we have varying degrees of commitment
among us, not to mention energy levels. It's called 'human nature.'
Now, about March. We will need to wait our appointments by the
Mayor but March usually has agenda items for new member intro-
ductions, re -visit of rules and regulations, etc. So I think we can
have a full plate by then, no matter who's doing what.
Make sense?
I'm fine with the December minutes and the February agenda.
Thank you for your very able assistance!

Hi Gene,
Please review the December minutes as well as the February agenda. Make any changes you
wish!!
In thinking about the Dental Priority Initiatives — remember Beverly sharing that we needed to
discuss as to whether or not to continue the dental? If you wish to discuss further first, then this
could be discussed under Item F --- but if you are thinking there might be a decision to be made,
then I need to create a specific agenda item for discussion and possible action --- let me know
what you are thinking.
Tiffany shared with me that whatever she has to say on Communications can be shared under
Item F.
Dennis shared with me that Faith in Action will be making some decisions on their
transportation during their February meeting, so he is wishing to wait until March to share about
Faith in Action.
John Sullivan shared that Arlana will give an update at the February meeting on her fall
program. Do you want to call upon her during Item F, at the end, as you usually do — or, make
an agenda item?
John Sullivan shared that in April, he will do his program/service update. At this time he will
give a 6 month overview. I think this is what he prefers — do a 6 month at a time overview.
Now for March, the only thing I have is Josie.
Nat Waggoner (remember he has spoken to us regarding transportation? Now he has moved
over to the Planning Dept. and is the manager with long range planning for the city) spoke to
me last week --- he shared since the city now has a new housing director, and she has had some
time to get adapted -- there are some things now that are being worked through on housing, he
thinks now is a good time for he and Susan Watkins to come and visit with the Commission —
he was thinking March/April. So I will stay with Nat and see which month he thinks would be
best.
Talk to you soon,
Linda

Living with Parkinson's disease (PD) can be
challenging... but there is HOPE!
HOPE in the fact, that there are things you
can do to maintain your quality of life and
live well. Our support group members are
all connected to Parkinson's disease in many
different ways — as patients, family
members, caregivers and talented individuals
from within business, medical and civic
communities. We are all care partners!
Some people may have difficulty coping
with Parkinson's disease and just are looking
for the support from others who understand!
We do!
Some people are looking for "why me?"
Whatever your reason, we have found that
many patients, family members and
caregivers gain encouragement and
understanding from meeting with others
folks who are touched with and by
Parkinson's disease.

• What is Parkinson's disease - Parkinson's disease (PD) is a chronic, progressive disease in which ordinary
movement may worsen over time. It was first described by James Parkinson in 1817
• Cause of PD still not known - Experts believe PD is the result of interaction between genetic and
environmental causes
• Who is At Risk and FACTS —
• Age - 60 years and older
• Heredity - close relative with Parkinson's disease increases the chances
• Sex - Men are more likely to develop Parkinson's disease
• Exposure to toxins - herbicides and pesticides possible connection
• How many affected - estimated I million in USA and 10 million worldwide
• Diagnosis Can Be Difficult - 60,000 Americans are diagnosed each year. However, it's difficult to know
exactly how many because many people in the early stages of the disease think their symptoms are due to normal aging.
Also, there are NO medical tests that can diagnose PD.
• PD affects the chemical neurotransmitters in brain — DOPAMINE!
• The 114" most common motor symptoms — tremors, slowness, stiffness, poor balance
• Other symptoms — Stooped posture, a tendency to lean forward, Impaired fine motor dexterity and motor
coordination (small handwriting), Impaired gross motor coordination, Poverty of movement (decreased arm swing),
Speech problems, such as softness of voice or slurred speech caused by lack of muscle control, Difficulty swallowing,
Sexual dysfunction, Cramping, Drooling and excess saliva resulting from reduced swallowing movements, constipation,
decreased or lack of smell, sleep disturbances, low blood pressure (dizziness/light-headed) depression, apathy, anxiety
• Treating Parkinson's —medication, exercise, eating right, DBS
Levodopa - Levodopa, coupled with carbidopa, (Sinemet) remains the gold standard of symptomatic
treatment for Parkinson disease.
• Parkinson's disease (PD) is not fatal, but it can reduce longevity. The disease progresses more quickly in
older patients, and may lead to severe incapacity within 10 - 20 years. Older patients also tend to have
muscle freezing and greater declines in mental function and daily functioning than younger people.
Let's Talk Positive's —There is tremendous research going on and already seen significant improvement!
