HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES 12.09.1986 - Charter Amendment ElectionRESOLUTION CONCERNING INTENTION OF CITY COUNCIL OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, TO HOLD AN ELECTION IN 1988 FOR CHARTER AMENDMENT PROPOSING ADOPTION OF A SINGLE MEMBER DISTRICT FORM OF REPRESENTATION; AUTHORIZING THE FORMATION OF AN AD HOC COMMITTEE OF CITIZENS TO RECOMMEND BOUNDARIES; WHEREAS, elections for representatives to the City Council of the City of Georgetown, Texas, have previously been based on an at large system of representation; and WHEREAS, the City Council of said City hereby deems it to be in the best interest of the Citizens of Georgetown to recommend the calling of an election to amend the City's home rule charter for the adoption of a new system of representation based upon single member districts; and WHEREAS, the Texas Constitution, Art. 11, Sec. 5, prohibits the City Council from calling a charter amendment election for the adoption of such new system of representation until Spring of 1988; and WHEREAS, the present City Council is also precluded by State law from calling such charter amendment election for 1988; and WHEREAS, in consideration of the foregoing, the City Council of the City of Georgetown, Texas, hereby makes the following resolution: NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS: 1. The City Council hereby publicly declares its intent to have a charter amendment election held in Spring of 1988 for the purpose of the adoption of a new system of representation, a single member district system, instead of the at large system presently utilized; 2. The City Council further authorizes the establishment of an ad hoc committee of citizens representing all segments of the population to recommend the location of district boundaries.
