HomeMy WebLinkAboutRES R85-18 - Railroad Transport CorridorR'-�SOLGTION R 85-18 WHEREAS, the Austin Metropolitan Area is experiencing an unprecedented rate of growth in suburban development which increases the demand for housing, public utilities, and transportation facilities; and WHEREAS, traffic volumes on the state highway system in Travis and Williamson Counties on the average have increased 97% between 1980 and 1984, and WHEREAS, Travis County, , City of Austin, and State Department of Highways and Public Transportation acting cooperatively through the Austin Transportation Study have employed the firm of CRS-SIRRINE to develop an updated transportation plan for the Austin Metropolitan Area, and WHEREAS, said Lc,,, 'ing firm has been instructed in its scope of work to examine the use of abandoned railroad rights-of-way to increase transportation facility capacities, and WHEREAS, there is potential for a transit and transportation corridor generally along the alignment of the abandoned Missouri -Kansas -Texas Railroad right-of-way extending from Georgetown through a route east of Round Rock and Austin along U.S. Highway 183 and onto a logical terminus south of the Colorado River, and WHEREAS, there is an imperative public necessity to reserve up to 300 feet of right-of-way for a limited access highway transit corridor before land subdivision activity precludes this transportation option, and WdREAS, certain property owners in the vicinity of the MKT Railroad right-of-way have agreed to form the MOKAN Corridor Association and to donate 300 feet of right of way !for the purpose of a transit and transportation corridor in Travis and Williamson Counties, NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS That the City Council supports and encourages a transit and transportation corridor along the alignment of the abandoned Missouri -Kansas -Texas Railroad right of way. _ V � e wry Y V ,,-`,:,CITY SECRETARY R 4,'tia sAt4 # PASSED, APPROVED, AND ADOPTED this the 14th day of May. 1985.
