The City of Georgetown is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you require assistance in participating at a public meeting due to a disability, as defined under the ADA, reasonable assistance, adaptations, or accommodations will be provided upon request. Please contact the City Secretary's Office, at least four (4) days prior to the scheduled meeting date, at (512) 930-3652 or City Hall at 113 East 81h Street for additional information; TTY users route through Relay Texas at 711. Regular Session (This Regular session may, at any time, be recessed to convene an Executive Session for any purpose authorized by the Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code 551.) A. Call to Order Chairman Gene Jantzen called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Six Board members were present, with Beverly Stehle and Dennis Dalrymple absent, thus constituting a quorum. Note: Bernie Farkas resigned on May 16, 2018, as of this date no replacement has been appointed, Commission consists of 8 members rather than 9. Also present were Fire Chief John Sullivan, Staff Support to the Commission, and Linda White, Staff Liaison Office Specialist. Legislative Regular Agenda B. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes of the meeting held on May 21,2018— Gene 1,2018— Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Ginny Hahn moved to approve the minutes from the meeting held on May 21, 2018. Dan Bonner seconded the motion, which the Board approved unanimously. (6-0) C. Discussion and possible action on the "Elder Friendly Design" pamphlet suggesting builders consider design elements that go further than the legislated ADA requirements — Ginny Hahn, Vice Chair, Commission on Aging. Gene Jantzen, Chair, commended Ginny and those who assisted her, on the amazing job accomplished with the Elder Friendly Design pamphlet. Ginny shared that 500 pamphlets were printed with 50 pamphlets each being given to Glen Holcomb, Chief Building Official, Fire Chief John Sullivan, and Sofia Nelson, Planning Director, for distribution to developers and construction engineers. D. Discussion and possible action on Georgetown Senior Expo — Virginia Lazenby, Commission on Aging. Virginia shared that she and John Sullivan had met with David Morgan, City Manager, three weeks ago. City Management is supportive of the Senior Expo and desire to meet again to review a detailed scheduled program, including a budget, and details of city responsibilities. The Commission was in agreement to invite David Morgan and the Senior Expo Planning Committee to attend the July 16" meeting of the Commission on Aging to discuss the Senior Expo. A letter of invitation will be prepared by the Chairman inviting the Planning Committee to attend the July 16' Commission on Aging meeting. E. Discussion and possible action of Priority Initiatives: Communication, Transportation, Dental Care, Affordable Housing, Mental Health, Legal Aid — Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Commission on Aging June 21, 2018 F. Discussion of future agendas and priorities — Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Tiffany Enos volunteered to contact Merritt Senior Living and invite them to our next meeting. Patrick Lloyd, Library Community Resources Coordinator, will give an update of the social needs among older adult patrons of the Georgetown Public Library in August. Nat Waggoner, Long Range Planning Manager and Susan Watkins, Housing Coordinator, will provide updates in September on Affordable Housing. We have a large older adult population, and many programs to support their aging. While we know that you are aware of ADA requirements, we're inviting you to consider Elder Friendly Design which will help your business / facility to be more customer friendly. Elder Friendly Design incorporates building layout, amenities and features that make it easier for aging seniors, many of whom have mobility, cognitive, audio, visual and other physical limitations, to visit and shop at local businesses. Among the design features you will want to consider are: • Parking and drop-off site adjacent to entryway for wheelchair users • Bright, glare -free lighting • Wider aisles to accommodate multiple customers and wheelchairs • Non -slip, level indoor flooring without risers or elevated thresholds • Large print signs and tags in high - contrast colors • Places to sit and rest • Working electric carts (where applicable) • Captioning on promotional videos for hearing impaired • Having magnifying glasses available for reading fine print • Readily available customer service and carry -out assistance • Automatic and power -assisted door openers • Electronic equipment with large buttons and big lettering We commend you for implementing ADA required building elements and urge you to consider design elements that go further than the legislated ADA requirements.
