Library Advisory Board

May 1, 2018
The Library Advisory Board met on Tuesday, May 1, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. in the first floor Staff Conference Room,
Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street
MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: Pat Baldwin, Lindsay Cooper, John Hudson, Michael Kelley, Linda Schaffer
and Thom Sinwell.
MEMBERS ABSENT: Pete Rose
STAFF IN ATTENDANCE: Eric Lashley - Library Director
Vice Chair Cooper called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M.
Regular Agenda
A. Consideration and possible action to approve the minutes of the March 20 2018 Library Advisory
Board meeting. — Pete Rose, Chair. Motion by Hudson; second by Schaffer to approve the March
2018 meeting minutes. Approved 6-0 (Rose absent).
B. Citizens wishing to address the Board. As of the deadline, no persons were signed up to speak on
items other than what was posted on the agenda. No action required.
C. Consideration of the Library Director's report. — Eric Lashley, Library Director. Lashley gave a report
regarding library operations including topics such as the National Medal announcement and videos,
monthly statistics and events, new information kiosks, an Overdrive Digital Consortium meeting and the
library's upcoming fundraiser with the Assistance League of Georgetown Area on May 19.
Sinwell discussed the library's new Adultish program and color coding in the adult fiction section.
Lashley will have more directory signs for the fiction collection printed soon.
The board reviewed comments from the library's suggestion box. No action required.
D. Report on the IMLS National Medal event May 1, 2018. — Eric Lashley, Library Director. Lashley
reported on the success of the IMLS National Medal announcement, noting attendance by Mayor Ross
and State Librarian Mark Smith. The National Medal ceremony will be held in Washington, D.C. on
Thursday, May 24. The ceremony will be web-strearned and the library will host a watch -party. Rosie
Rocke and Jane Estes will attend as Georgetown's community representatives. Staff members Kalena
Powell and Rachael Pattillo will accompany Lashley to the ceremony. Storycorps will visit Georgetown
for three days in the months following the National Medal ceremony. No action required.
E Report on library focus groups for Strategic Plan. —John Hudson, member Hudson reviewed notes
from focus groups he conducted with the library's Teen Advisory Board, students from both
Georgetown ISD high schools and other community partners. Topics discussed during the focus groups
were not limited to, but included: comfortable seating, transportation from high schools to library after
school ends, SAT/ACT test preparation training and programming for special needs adults. Community
partners expressed the need for the City to take a larger role in social services and not rely on the
library. These representatives showed concern that the library would continue to say "yes" and spread
themselves too thin.
Students acknowledged the importance of the library, but do not use the library. Community partners
acknowledged the importance of the library and see the library as a community hub; a center for
cultural learning.
Hudson explained that he would like to conduct one final focus group with the homeschooling
community and possibly students who attend charter schools. No action required.
F. Consideration of future meeting dates. —Pete Rose, Chair. Lashley will not be able to attend the July 3
meeting which the board can discuss during June's meeting. The next meeting will be held on Tuesday,
June 5 at 5:30 p.m.
Vice Chair Cooper adjourned the meeting at 7:20 p.m.
