Library Advisory Board
City of Georgetown
June 5, 2018
The Library Advisory Board met on Tuesday, June 5, 2018 at 5:30 p.m. in the first floor Staff Conference
Room, Georgetown Public Library, 402 W. 8th Street
MEMBERS IN ATTENDANCE: Pat Baldwin, Lindsay Cooper, Michael Kelley, Pete Rose, Linda Schaffer and
Thom Sinwell.
MEMBERS ABSENT: John Hudson
STAFF IN ATTENDANCE: Eric Lashley - Library Director
Chair Rose called the meeting to order at 5:30 P.M.
Regular Agenda
A. Citizens wishing to address the Board. As of the deadline, no persons were signed up to speak on
items other than what was posted on the agenda. No action required.
B. Review of citizen request for reconsideration of library material by Tracy Tucker. —Eric Lashley, Library
Director, Ms. Tucker was not present to address the board with her concerns about Brian Biggs'
Tinyville Town I'm a Librarian. Lashley reviewed Tucker's request form with the board, noting that the
challenged book would be in his office for board members to review until next meeting. The board will
vote on whether or not to keep the book in the library's collection at the July meeting. No action
required.
C. Consideration and possible action to approve minutes from the May 1, 2018 Library Advisory Board
meeting. — Pete Rose, Chair. Motion by Baldwin; second by Sinwell to approve the May 2018
meeting minutes with suggested corrections given to Lashley. Approved 6-0 (Hudson absent).
D. Consideration of the Library Director's report. — Eric Lashley, Library Director. Lashley gave a report
regarding library operations including the following topics:
• IMLS National Medal ceremony in Washington, D.C.
• Monthly statistics- board members noticed inaccuracies in the statistics and requested
confirmation on the numbers for 2016-17 and 2017-18 fiscal years.
• The Friends of the Library's new policy of accepting donations for used books, instead of a
specific price, has yielded an increase of approximately thirty percent. FOL's board voted to
make that a permanent change.
• Lashley invited the Library Board to a "Thank You" breakfast hosted by Mayor Ross, to receive
special recognition for winning the IMLS National Medal. The breakfast will be held on June 6 at
8 a.m.
• The City of Georgetown and Williamson County came to terms for a twenty year lease for a new
parking lot across the street from the library, on 8` Street. This lot would increase parking
substantially, relocate the GoGeo bus stop and possibly have room for a future farmer's market.
• Congressman John Carter presented staff with a Congressional Certificate and U.S. flag in
honor of the library winning the National Medal. Congressman Carter was a regular patron of
the library when he was a judge working in the courthouse on MILK Street. Carter also served as
honorary co-chair of the capital campaign for the library's foundation when the City began
construction on the current building in 2007.
• Upcoming events and patron comments- Board members discussed the suggestion to have a
"standing search station downstairs" for those who need to stand while using a computer due to
back problems or other complications. Lashley will work to create some standing terminals for
patrons. No action required.
E. Consideration of future meeting dates. —Pete Rose, Chair. Lashley will not be able to attend the July 3
meeting. After much discussion, there was a motion by Kelley; second by Schaffer to move next
month's meeting to July 10 at 10 a.m. Approved 6-0 (Hudson absent).
Vice Chair Cooper adjourned the meeting at 6:15 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Pat Baldwin Pete Rose

Klrkus Reviews (07/01/2017):
The Tinyville Town series continues with a day in the life of Kevin the librarian. In first -person narration, Kevin, who
is white, states "I'm very good at answering questions," as the sleeping form on the other side of the bed, slightly
darker of skin, asks the first question of the morning via speech bubble: "What time is it?" During the morning
commute, the Q-and-A continues as Kevin gives the various residents of Tinyville directions and bus information.
While he's on duty at the library information desk, Owen, a young brown -skinned patron, asks for books about
elephants, but they are not on the shelf. Kevin and the youngster search the building until they finally find another
library user sitting at a table enjoying the titles on pachyderms. Biggs' pleasingly chunky cartoons, rendered with
thick black lines and in bright hues against a white background, continue to be the star of this growing series. While
this librarian's job duties may be a little stereotypical and traditional (Kevin does little beyond reference work and
shelving), Biggs has boiled down the librarian job description to the activities a toddler can relate to. Kevin ends the
day reading in bed with the same companion, whose profile subtly hints that this librarian may be in a same -sex
relationship. tots of love for librarians in these 22 pages --and plenty for toddlers to love, too. (Board book. 2-4)
