OLD GEORGETOWN CEMETERY.
The Williamson County Historical Survey Committee, Georgetown
Branch is sponsoring the restoration of the "Old Georgetown Cemetery"
which is located on the banks of the South San Gabriel river in the
northwest part of the original Georgetown City Limits just beyond the
Carver High School.
It is not known when the first grave was made but some are marked,
indicating the date of 1850 and some as late as 1902. It is likely that
no burial has been made there in the past 60 years and from the rank growth
under -brush and small trees, no oare or improvement has been shown to have
been made.
The Georgetown Committee of the Historical Survey has made an appeal
to the descendents of those pioneer citizens who are buried in this
cemetery, to assist in its restoration. Also, local organizations and
groups, service organizations::and patriotic groups have shown much interest.
The results of the effort has been encouraging.
The Phi Delta Theta fraternity at Southwestern have given about NO
man hours of work in clearing out the under -brush. The City has hauled
many truck loads of brush off of the grounds. Cash donations have come
from local citizens and from friends and decendents and from friends and
decedents from as far away as California and Virginia and from Amarillo
and EI Paso and many other towns in Texas. Local building and material
firms have contibuted fence materials and concrete and it is hoped that
by Memorial Day, May 30th, that the Historical marker can be dedicated
and the restoration can be complete.
