P R O C L A M A T I O N
WHEREAS, City staff, City Council and our partners in the Georgetown Police Department and the
Georgetown Independent School District recognize the value of providing safe and reliable routes to school; and
WHEREAS, these routes promote healthy lifestyles for our children and uphold the high quality of life our
community enjoys as a whole; and
WHEREAS, this event on International Walk or Bike to School Day is one of more than 4,000 events being
held across the county today; and
WHEREAS, this sidewalk, the only connection for school children to bike or walk to school, was made
possible by a federal grant from the Safe Routes to Schools Program; and
WHEREAS, this sidewalk is used each school day by children bicycling or walking to Mitchell Elementary
School; and
WHEREAS, when kids walk or bike to school instead of riding in a car, they help reduce pollution emitted by
vehicles; and
WHEREAS, this sidewalk encourages school children to get physical activity each day, building the habit of
regular exercise that can increase their health for a lifetime.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, do hereby
proclaim October 8th, from this day forward to be
WALK OR BIKE TO SCHOOL DAY
