HomeMy WebLinkAboutWesley Chapel Day_7.13.14 P R O C L A M A T I O N WHEREAS, Wesley Chapel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Georgetown is 145 years old, having been organized in 1869 by Richard Haywood, and is the first independent black church in Georgetown; and WHEREAS, the current building was built in 1904, under the direction of Rev. J.A. Jones; and WHEREAS, on Sunday, July 13, 2014, Wesley Chapel will celebrate with special guest Rev. Diane Carmichael and the Sandy Point A.M.E Church of Dime Box, Texas; and WHEREAS, Wesley Chapel was recorded in the Texas Historical Landmarks in 1984, was entered in the National Register of Historic Places in 1986; and is also listed in the 1999 African Americans in Texas Historical and Cultural Legacies; and WHEREAS, the members of the Wesley Chapel have been a consistent force in the community for nearly a century and a half in several way: outreach ministry providing emergency food and financial assistance; and supporting the Wounded Warrior Program and the local Boys and Girls Club. The African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church is a global organization committed to being emissaries of the Gospel locally and throughout the world; members continue to be the Church on the Corner, where love abides, Jesus guides and “all are welcome”; and WHEREAS, on November 14, 2009, Rev. Silas Swint was appointed as Pastor of Wesley Chapel, and during his administration, the Wesley Chapel Family has taken on many ongoing projects to enhance their house of worship; and WHEREAS, the Wesley Chapel Family has made a commitment to remain a permanent presence and contributor to our fine community; and WHEREAS, it is fitting and proper that we observe a day when all in our community may acknowledge the importance of the role of Wesley Chapel AME church in the community; and WHEREAS, the City of Georgetown congratulates Wesley Chapel AME Church on their 142st Anniversary. NOW, THEREFORE, I, DALE ROSS, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, TEXAS, do hereby proclaim Sunday, July 13, 2014, as WESLEY CHAPEL DAY
