ANSWER: No! Due to employee request, longevity checks will be issued on Friday, December 10, 1993. They will be distributed to you by your Division Director on the loth. This deviates from the tradition of passing them out at the Employee Recognition Luncheon. Because many employees use that money for Christmas, the City wants you to have your longevity pay before the 17th. The Holidays Are Coming! City offices will be closed November 25 & 26 for the Thanksgiving Holidays. During the Christmas holidays City offices will only be closed Friday, December 24. RAP -A -ROUND 11/19/93 Page 2 DEPARTMENT UPDATES Information Services ASCII Name Calling When we name files on our computers. we often use the first thing that comes to mind that describes the file. While being descriptive is good, it is important to remember that each computer system has certain rules for naming. These rules are important because they prevent the computer from thinking your files are commands, procedures or programs. This time we will talk about some of the things to look for. The first thing to know is what limitations there are on the length of the names you can use. For example DOS allows you to use 8 characters, a period, and 3 more characters. This looks like: XXXXXXXX.XXX The x's represent valid characters. Most other systems have similar limitations, though they are not a small as DOS. The portion that has a period followed by 3 or less characters is called an extension. Some programs automatically put an extension any file they create. This behavior can cause problems if the program is expecting to find a certain extension and you substitute a different one. Al The second thing you need to know, is what characters are valid for names on your computer. Most systems accept the letters of the alphabet and the numbers (0-9). Some systems will also accept other characters. The most common of these are the dollar sign ($), the underscore (_), number symbol W, and the percent symbol N. If you are unsure of the valid naming symbols, please check your manual. On some systems, an invalid file name can cause the file to be lost to you. The final thing to check, is what are the limitations on character placement. This means, where can you use or not use specific characters. For example, some systems require that the file name begin with a letter. Others require program files to begin with a dollar sign ($). This is normally more important with specific programs than with a whole system. Store your files ih an organized fashion. If your system allows you to create directories or groups of files, use this to organize your files. On a PC, you can do this by creating a forms directory and storing all your WordPerfect forms in it. Finally, give your files names that help you remember what they are. For example, if you create forms in WordPerfect, name your form files like: XXXXXXXX. FRM This will remind you that the file is a form. Following the naming conventions for your computer system is important and can make your job easier. Good computing!
