We wish you luck in your new job, Penny. Come back and visit on one of your days off. Dear Friends, As you read this letter, I will have begun my new position with the Jarrell Independent School District. It is with much happiness that I accept this new job, but with despair that I must leave behind the many friends and relationships I have made over the past five years of my employment with the City. I will carry many fond memories, lots of laughs and most of all the loving, caring memories of each of you. Many thanks to one and all for providing me with support and encouragement over the years. I leave this special verse to those most special to me, you know who you are: You shall be remembered more for: our kindness, than for our accomplishments; your generosity than for your riches; and your service than for your successes. Best wishes and May God Bless each of you. = Sincerely, Penny L. Thomas BULLETIN BOARD Help Wanted... Part time Recreation Assistant, Parks & Recreation Division. This year will see the 90th anniversary of the first battle for the World championship. To commemorate the occasion, enjoy this baseball trivia. In the first World Series, in October, 1903, the Boston Red Sox beat the Pittsburgh Pirates five games to three (in what was then the best -of -nine series). The first night baseball game was played at Crosley Field in Cincinnati on May 24, 1935. The Cincinnati Reds beat the Philadelphia Philies, 2-1. The Record for stealing home is held by Ty Cobb, who did it 46 times during his 22-year career. The longest baseball game on record took eight hours and six minutes and was played by the Chicago White Sox and the Milwaukee Brewers on May 9, 1984. The White Sox won, 7-6. The customary seventh -inning stretch, which takes place before the home team comes to bat, became popular because the number seven traditionally is considered lucky and is a wish for good luck from superstitious fans to the home team. Tips for Effortless Entrees A full day of working_ and commuting may not leave you with much energy- for preparing a well- balanced, home cooked meal. So microwavable entrees, sandwiches, or take-out often fill the bill for week -night dinners. But here are some tips that can help you prepare a fresh meal in the same time it takes to heat a frozen dinner. 0 Go beyond the basics when stocking your pantry. Include items like sesame oil, soy sauce, Parmesan cheese, chili paste, nuts, liquid hickory smoke, bouillon cubes, and raisins. These will add a different flavor to ordinary dishes. • Use your weekends. Take advantage of any time off to cook entrees that will keep as tasty leftovers. Lasagna, soup, and casseroles are good examples. • Liven up prepared pasta sauces with fresh vegetables and spices. • Take advantage of the prepared foods offered in supermarkets. These include chopped vegetables at the salad bar, peeled shrimp, skinned and boned chicken breasts, and pre -roasted or barbecued meats. • Don't get caught up in preparing everything before you start to cook. Get your meat started, then you can begin chopping vegetables. RAP -A -ROUND 10/08/93 Page 3 DEPARTMENT UPDATES Development Services The third quarter of 1993 was a busy one! A total of 65 New Construction permits were issued. This has been the largest amount of building permits issued in a quarter since the beginning of the 90's. In the third quarter of 1992, there were only 30 New Constructions, which more than doubled in the third quarter of this year. In addition to the 65 New Construction permits issued in the third quarter, 104 Electrical permits, 47 Mechanical permits, and 86 Plumbing permits were issued. Also, an additional 36 Building permits were issued for constructions including: fences, signs, and remodelfike The Building department is making great efforts to issue permits and perform various inspections needed within a reasonable amount of time so that the contractors will not encounter any delays in the construction process. In our efforts to maintain an effective service, we have planned a general meeting for all contractors. This meeting will entail: introducing our new inspector, code related issues, inspection techniques, and answering any questions about the Building Permit/Inspection Process. The meeting has been scheduled for Thursday, October 14, 1993 at the San Gabriel Park at 12 noon with bar-b-que dinners being served. Community Owned Utilities Team Work Rewarded " Crew of the Week" in the Water/Wastewater Departments of Community Owned Utilities are as follows: Week of 9-27 Rodney Hrachovy & Lonnie Reed Week of 10-04 the was a tie between the team of Michael Hallmark & Monnie Montgomery Each week a "Crew of the Week" is selected from the 2 man crew members in the department. To qualify as "Winners" the crew must have demonstrated proper, neat dress; friendly attitude toward fellow employees as well as customers in the field; practiced "Safety First" during job performance; properly cleaned vehicles to represent the City; and completed a high number of work orders. We commend these crew members for their efforts in promoting pride and accomplishment in their jobs.
