CUSTOMER SERVICE Jim Landry, Scott Williams, Gary Satchell, Gregorio Lira: These gentlemen assisted the Community Services Division with the preparation, set-up, and clean-up of the dedication event of the new Park & Ride Facility. The positive attitude displayed by these staff members in assisting another department was greatly appreciated! ' Ruth Gonzales: Shares went out to Ruth for all the hard work she did for three months when the old hand-held meter reading machines were completely broken. The new hand-helds had not been purchased yet, so all meter reading had to be done manually for 15,000 meters. When the new hand-helds came in she even taught the Meter Readers how to use them while Mike Lyda was on vacation. Rita Martinez and Kim Schmidt: Recently, a woman came to the Police Station asking for assistance. The woman was an abused wife and had walked from another town to get help. Rita and Kim arranged to let the woman speak with an abuse counselor and when the woman stated that she was hungry, Rita and Kim pooled their money to buy the woman a pizza. The kindness displayed by these two caring dispatchers deserved recognition. Mary Rodriguez and Marianne Banks: Marianne and Mary stayed after hours on the Friday before Labor Day to assist a woman who came in to get documents notarized. The woman's name had changed and she couldn't legally prove she was the same person. The woman was having a problem with the real estate company who sent her the documents. They insisted that she had to sign her maiden name. Marianne got on the phone and called the real estate company and eventually straightened the situation out. Mary and Marianne then stayed late to draw up the proper forms the woman would need in order to sign her name legally. The woman sent a letter stating: "Everybody in your City Hall/Legal Department office has such a warm, friendly, Texas attitude. What a treat! You are great! " Judy Osborne: Judy was called out at 11:00 p.m. on Sunday in reference to a possible rabid possum in an elderly lady's yard. Judy spoke with the woman on the phone for 20 minutes, then went to her home and stayed there for an hour visiting with her. In addition, she was invited to tea the next day and graciously accepted. This obviously goes far beyond the call of duty and leaves a lasting impression of the dedication and generosity of the City of Georgetown. Mary Ann Valenta: Mary Ann earned the taxpayers of Georgetown over $7,300 by researching and filing for a previously unknown diesel fuel tax refund. Her initiative also reduced future City operating costs. The Finance and Administration division should be proud to have an employee who goes above and beyond their job duties to save the City money! Penny Thomas, Pattie Justice, and Laurie McClure: These woman volunteered their invaluable assistance during the Benefits Fair. All three were a tremendous help and played an important role in the Fair being a successful event. They patiently answered employee's questions and diligently checked all the forms for accuracy for 10 hours on the day of the fair and throughout the week as well. They provided excellent, friendly customer service to all their fellow employees and the City is grateful for their help. Mike Faught, Robert Munoz, Bill Strickland, Ricky Bielss, Richard Faught, Scott Gibson, Greg Hislop, Glen Patterson, Troy Sanderfer, Kim Schmidt, William C. Shell, Travis Walden, Les Bunte, Don Jansen, Tom Leggitt. This team worked together when a storage building on Leander Road caught fire. A citizen wrote in to say that he was very impressed with the extra care and attention the firefighters used in saving his Harley Davidson motorcycle. The firefighters were unable to cut through the lock on this gentleman's storage facility so they went through the side wall to get the cycle out. The motorcycle was in perfect condition - not even a scratch. The man felt this team should be acknowledged for their good work and so do we! 'Big 100i Help Wanted... Cadet Ronald Price will graduate from the Travis County Peace Officer Academy on September 30, 1993. We all look forward to working with Ron and getting him out on the street. Officer Mike Tackett only has three weeks left of his field training. We are excited about having these new officers join our team. Development Services The Texas Chapter of the American Planning Association has named Georgetown the COMMUNITY OF THE YEAR for 1993. This award is given to "a town, city or county which has provided an outstanding contribution to planning. " Georgetown was honored with this award on the basis of the Century Plan and the way in which it has been integrated into the budget process (or the Annual Operating Plan element of the Century Plan) and the widespread acceptance and involvement of the City staff, the City Council, and the community. Mayor Leo Wood and members of the Planning Department will accept the award on October 8 at the State Conference of the Texas Chapter of the APA. This is an honor for which all City staff should be proud because it took the hard work and commitment of everyone to make the Century Plan a success. The Division of Development Services wishes to say THANK YOU to everyone for your assistance in this process - and CONGRATULATIONS!! RAP -A -ROUND 09/24/93 Page 3 Finance & Administration Sgfety & Risk Management The entire division recently received an award from the Texas Department of Transportation for "outstanding service in helping the department maintain the beauty of Texas roadsides through participation in the Adopt -A -Highway Antilitter Program over a period from October 1, 1991 to October 1, 1993". In order to receive this award, the group has cleaned the two mile stretch of Andice Road just west of the Lakeway Pool four times each year. This can be a thankless job but is well worth the effort. Way to go, Finance & Administration employees! Fire Services Our own Tom Leggitt is now President of the Fire Marshal's Association. Tom has served the last two years as Vice President of the group. The Association's goal is to promote public education, fire safety and prevention. Training is also high on their priority list. Congratulations, Tom! Public Utilities Team Work Rewarded " Crew of the Week" in the Water/Wastewater Departments of Community Owned Utilities, are as follows: Week of 9-6 George Luera and Enrique Carrizales Week of 9-20 the was a tie between the team of Michael Hallmark & Monnie Montgomery and Lonnie L. Reed and Rodney Hrachovy Each week a "Crew of the Week" is selected from the 2 man crew members in the department. To qualify as "Winners" the crew must have demonstrated proper, neat dress; friendly attitude toward fellow employees as well as customers in the field; practiced "Safety First" during job performance; properly cleaned vehicles to represent the City; and completed a high number of work orders. We commend these crew members for their efforts in promoting pride and accomplishment in their jobs. Yes, the incentive program is still alive! Those individuals who complete the year without any on-the- job accident or injury will be eligible for incentive pay. However, as explained to supervisors last winter, the program runs the calendar year (January to December), rather than the fiscal year (October to September). So be on the lookout for more information regarding your individual status by (hopefully) the first part of November. As you probably know, we have had a vacancy in the Risk Management position, so we have not communicated as much on the incentive program as people would have liked. BUT ... good news ... after extensive recruitment, we have a very promising group of finalists to fill the position. We will call this person a agfeety and Emergency Management Coordinator to put maximum emphasis on his/her job of making sure that employees have the equipment and training to do their jobs safely (in addition to emergency management responsibilities). There will be a panel of employees from several City divisions that will select the new Safety Manager: Mark Miller from Public Utilities, Jim Landry from Parks and Recreation, James Simonson from Police Services, and Elizabeth Gray from Management Services. If you have any thoughts on what you would like to see in a Safety Coordinator, talk to one of these people. The Safety Coordinator works for you because YOU are the one who is out there doing the work. Thought for the Week All the great things are simple, and many can be expressed in a single word: freedom, justice, honor, duty, mercy, hope. Winston Churchill REGULAR CONTRIBUTORS: Joanna Brandon, Jeff Clausius, Stephanie Crenshaw, Leon Henderson, Kathy Ragsdale and Penny Thomas. Please submit ads or articles you would like in the newsletter to Joanna Brandon BY 5:00 the Tuesday before payroll.
