Georgetown Aging Initiative
Request for City Sponsorship
Proposal: The Georgetown Aging Initiative Advisory Committee is requesting co-
sponsorship by the City of Georgetown for a survey and focus groups we are
conducting to identify our City's needs and assets in serving older adults.
Georgetown Aging Initiative:
The Georgetown Aging Initiative began meeting in 2009 with the goal of making our city a
community of excellence for older residents and their caregivers. The Initiative is comprised of
key leaders in the Georgetown community who have an interest in the well being of older adults.
Assessment of Community Needs and Strengths:
The Georgetown Aging Initiative Advisory Committee is working with Family Eldercare to
conduct a comprehensive community assessment of older adults' needs and services. The
assessment will consist of four components:
1. Focus groups with older adults
2. Comprehensive survey of older adults
3. Focus groups of key leaders
4. Inventory of existing services
The intent of the focus groups and survey is designed to collect seniors' perspectives on local
health, social service and transportation services, opportunities for social and civic engagement
and support for families and caregivers of older adults.
Request:
We are seeking co-sponsorship by the City in order to reach as many seniors as possible.
Broad community participation is essential to ensuring that our assessment accurately reflects
the opinions of all our senior residents.
Given the city's commitment to the initiative adds credibility and value to the survey and focus
groups. Results from the assessments will be helpful to the City in its planning efforts.
Co-sponsorship will provide us with the following benefits:
• Promotion of the survey through announcements on the City web site (including Library
and Parks and Recreation sites), the Library (digital displays and bulletin board) and the
Recreation Center (bulletin board)
• Cable Channel 10 Public Service Announcement
• Announcements in the City Reporter newsletter, and
• Utility bill inserts
We are also requesting the City's assistance to:
• Host the survey on-line so that residents can access it through the City web site
(including links from Library and Parks and Recreation sites)
• Provide free meeting space for focus groups and survey outreach (at Library or
Recreation Center)
• Assist in providing local data to inform the assessment process

Subject: Georgetown Aging Initiative presentation to City Council
George,
What an incredible ministry! In these days, COR is a blessing to us all.
Sue and I go to Springfield, MO this next weekend for our annual conference. Joplin will be on everyone's mind
and heart. COR's response is a great example of faith in action, and will, no doubt, model for many other
congregations' response in the region.
On another subject, the Georgetown Aging Initiative is ready to present our request for partnership with the City of
Georgetown. We are organizing to make this request in a 12-15 minute presentation to the council on June 14.
We are ready to begin the data gathering phase of our study. I, along with Bob Brent, George and Barbara
Brightwell, and Ron Swain, will make the presentation. Members of our working group will be visiting with each
council member prior to our presentation so familiarize them with our proposal and strategy.
contacted Paul's office, as you suggested, and was told to simply fill out the forms to get on the agenda. No
money is being requested from the city for this effort.
I attach here the partnership proposal, our time -line, and an illustration from Sonora, CA's survey instrument
which will serve as a model which we shall customize for our survey of Georgetown's senior adult current and
future needs and capacities. Please look these over and let me know if you have questions or concerns. We all
greatly appreciate your guidance about the timing and presentation of this proposal.
My personal recovery continues slowly. All the medical people say patience is the key. I believe it! Thank you
for your encouragement all along the way.
Blessings,
Dan

Greetings. FYI. ggg
May 27, 2011
Dear Resurrection Family,
Throughout the week our missions team has been in conversation with the
coordinator for the United Methodist Church's disaster response team in Joplin
looking for ways for our church to be of support and help to the people there. The
UMC in Missouri is working with the Red Cross, the Salvation Army and the Convoy
of Hope to coordinate donations and teams to help. We sent an e-mail to you
yesterday with more detailed information about what you can do this weekend to
help. We have an assessment team that will be in Joplin on Monday to work with
officials there to map out a plan for deploying teams from Resurrection to help
with the clean up efforts.
Immediately, we've been asked to supply bottled water for the temporary shelters
and for the search, rescue and early response teams and $20 Walmart gift cards
to be distributed as needed. Could you purchase a case of bottled water and/or
could you purchase a $20 Walmart gift card? If you could bring those to the
church today, or this weekend when you come to worship? We will be delivering
these on Monday morning.
Through June 3rd we'll collect items for personal hygiene kits which will be
assembled on June 4th by volunteers. From June 4-10th we'll assemble "joy
buckets for children. We're asking you to donate items for these according to the
letter of the alphabet your last name begins with. See the bottom of today's e-mail
for the information on what you can bring.
For more information on how you can give or on signing up to be a part of a
disaster response team click on this link, www.cor.orq/tornado.
Here's what I'll cover in the rest of today's e-mail:

1. This Weekend: The Real Social Network
This weekend we begin a new three-part sermon series you won't want to miss called The Real
Social Network. So much of our lives today are spent connecting with people electronically - we txt,
we FB, we IM, we Twitter and we e-mail just to name a few. But in this series Pastor Scott
Chrostek of our downtown campus will focus our attention on how we develop real community in
this digital age and what role the church and our faith play in that. You'll be blessed and
encouraged through this terrific sermon series. Click here to see the sermon series promo and to
Twitter, Facebook, E-mail or IM it to a friend.
2. Congrats to Pastors Penny Ellwood, Anne Williams and Rob Walters
In the United Methodist Church pastors are first commissioned as "provisional elders" and then
they are ordained as full elders. They must first complete their Master of Divinity Degree or the
Course of Study and have worked through an extensive credentialing process. In two weeks Pastor
Rob Walters will be commissioned at the Kansas East Annual Conference. Pastor Anne Williams is
being commissioned at the Kansas West Annual Conference. Pastor Penny Ellwood will be ordained
a full elder at the Kansas East Annual Conference in two weeks. Congratulations to Rob, Anne and
Penny!
3. Welcome Summer Interns!
This past Monday, we welcomed 14 very bright and talented college aged students to our staff into
our summer internship program. The role of summer internships at Resurrection is to prepare
future leaders for the church. During their internships these young people are helped to discern
God's call on their lives through mentoring and hands-on ministry experiences at our church. As a
church we benefit by having 14 outstanding young people serving to multiply our ministry in a
variety of areas. Many of these interns will go on to successful ministry careers in the future, both
as clergy and as lay staff and volunteer leaders. I'm excited by what they will be able to do and
learn this summer and would ask that you give them a special welcome as you see them out and
about the church this summer.
4. Memorial Day, Memorial Garden Hours
The Church Offices will be closed on Monday, but the Memorial Garden will be open from 10 am to
3 pm. Please enter through the Church Office door on the south side of the Leawood East Building.
If you would like more information about our Memorial Garden and purchasing a niche for the
inurnment of ashes or an engraved paver to remember a loved one, call Raelene Herndon at 913-
544-0743.
S. President of Starbucks Speaking at Resurrection?
Yes, the President of Starbucks will be speaking, via video simulcast, in our Sanctuary as a part of
the Willow Creek Summit we'll be hosting once more this year on August 11-12. This event is an
opportunity for you to invest in your own leadership by hearing from outstanding leaders, creative
thinkers and great practitioners. The cost for most participants is $249. For Resurrection members,
because we're a host site, you can register for only $75. These two days are not only for church
leaders, but for anyone who wants to be a more effective leader at work, in the community and in
daily life. Speakers include Howard Schultz, President of Starbucks, Henry Cloud, Psychologist and
best selling author of 9 Things a Leaders Must Do, Cory Booker, Mayor of Newark who has helped
turn Newark around, and a host of others. For more information or to register, click on this link. It
is going to be a great event and I want to encourage you to be a part of this. If you are a leader at
Resurrection, I want to encourage you to make this a priority.
6. This Week: I'm Speaking in Houston and Santa Fe - Please Pray
On Monday and Tuesday of this coming week I'll speak in Houston, Texas to the Texas Annual
Conference (one of several Texas Annual Conferences). Then on Wednesday and Thursday I'll
speak in Glorietta, New Mexico to the New Mexico Annual Conference (which includes portions of
west Texas). I'll take a couple of days off in Santa Fe, then it's on to Waco, Texas on Sunday. I'll
speak at the Central Texas Annual Conference Sunday night and Monday. From there I'll head back
file:X:\Documents and Settings\jbrettle.GEORGETOWN\Local Settings\Temp\notes97E... 5/31/2011
Page 4 of 5
to Kansas City and will attend the Kansas East Annual Conference meeting at Resurrection. Then
I'm off to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania to speak to the Susquehanna Annual Conference (the western
two thirds of Pennsylvania). From there I'll fly to Sacramento to speak to the California -Nevada
Annual Conference and, after taking a couple of days of rest there I'll be heading back home.
Last weekend we asked each of you to pray for every pastor, every local churches,
the district superintendents and bishops of each conference. I've been praying
daily for Rev. Ronald Oden and the Lakeview UMC in Waco, Texas and for Rev.
Allyson Paxton and the people of the Midloathian First UMC in Midloathian, Texas.
If you did not get a prayer tent with a church to pray for, please pray for me that
God will use me to encourage, equip and inspire these churches. Some of these
conferences may be broadcast live via the Internet and I'll try to let you know
about this as well.
As I close, I want to remind you of our vision at Resurrection. It is posted in 20
inch letters on the wall of our Narthex at the Leawood campus: Changing Lives,
Transforming Communities, and Renewing Churches. This week and every
week we're focused on being used by God to see lives changed at our various
campuses. This week you'll be "transforming communities" by bringing help and
hope to the people of Joplin, along with the hundreds of other things you do every
week in serving in Kansas City and around the world. And you're sending me out
to teach, preach and encourage thousands of pastors and church leaders as they
seek to renew their churches.
I am grateful and proud to be your pastor!
Adam
Tornado Relief Update
Our hearts and prayers go out to the people in the communities destroyed by
tornados in the past couple of weeks, particularly our neighbors in Joplin and
Sedalia. The Church of the Resurrection is working with Missouri Conference of the

worship times, you can bring bottled water and Walmart gift cards in $20 denominations to the

purchase gift cards. These items will be collected through Sunday and delivered on Monday, May
30.

The Georgetown Aging Initiative survey will be customized to reflect Georgetown -specific
questions for items 1, 23, 38, 63, 87, and 98.
Question 98 indicates a raffle entry. The Georgetown Aging Initiative proposal allows for each
participant who completes the survey to receive $10. Our ability to provide this incentive
depends on fundraising for the initiative. Sponsors of the survey will be recognized at the end of
the survey with a statement such as "This survey was made possible by the following sponsors"
or "Incentives courtesy of ABC Sponsors".
