The City of Georgetown is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you require assistance in participating at a public meeting due to a disability, as defined under the ADA, reasonable assistance, adaptations, or accommodations will be provided upon request. Please contact the City Secretary’s Office, at least four (4) days prior to the scheduled meeting date, at (512) 930-3652 or City Hall at 113 East 8th Street for additional information; TTY users route through Relay Texas at 711. Regular Session (This Regular session may, at any time, be recessed to convene an Executive Session for any purpose authorized by the Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code 551.) A. Call to Order Chairman Gene Jantzen called the meeting to order at 6:03 p.m. Seven Board members were present, with Board members Dan Bonner and Ginny Hahn absent, thus constituting a quorum. Also present were Linda White, Staff Liaison Office Specialist; Arlana Bryant, Medical/Health Coordinator with the Georgetown Fire Department; and Patrick Lloyd, Community Resources Coordinator with the City Library. Legislative Regular Agenda B. Consideration and possible action to approve the minutes of the meeting held on September 18, 2017. Ron Brandon moved to approve the minutes from the meeting held on September 18, 2017. Dennis Dalrymple seconded the motion, which the Board approved unanimously. (7-0) C. Review the purpose and role of the Georgetown Commission on Aging and discuss additional resources needed to support the aging initiatives in the City – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. The Commission reviewed and discussed each of the individual purposes of the Commission on Aging as listed in the Bylaws. Commission was encouraged to be mindful of any announcements of grants becoming available in support of senior citizens. The City currently has many agencies whose goals are to support needs of the senior citizen living in Georgetown. D. Discussion and updates on the Georgetown Senior Expo Advisory Committee and developing plans for the event – Virginia Lazenby, Commission on Aging. Virginia distributed overview notes of the plans thus far for Senior Day in Georgetown. Discussion occurred. Virginia explained the Senior Day has two purposes: 1) to highlight the services, resources and opportunities for seniors in Georgetown, and 2) to recognize the significant contributions seniors make across Georgetown. Virginia is in hopes that Mayor Ross will make a proclamation stating indicating April 3rd as Senior Day and several contributions of seniors throughout the City. From these discussions, a proposal came before the Commission. Consideration and possible action for the Commission on Aging to propose April 3, 2018 as Senior Day in Georgetown. Virginia Lazenby moved to approve the Commission on Aging to propose April 3, 2018 as Senior Day in Georgetown. Bernie Farkas seconded the motion, which the Board approved unanimously. (7-0). Page 4 of 11 Commission on Aging October 16, 2017 2 Virginia will work with Fire Chief John Sullivan, support staff to Commission on Aging, to schedule an appointment for her, Gene Jantzen and himself to meet with David Morgan, City Manager, to discuss Senior Day in Georgetown and schedule a time to present at City Council Workshop. E. Discussion and updates on the Sun City Expo to be held on October 25, 2017 – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Discussion occurred regarding the “Aging Resources Town Hall” to be held in Sun City on October 25th. Discussions and questions will be led by a panel of experts in their respective fields related to aging. Virginia Lazenby will be the moderator. Following the presentation, there will be an “Aging Resources Fair” that includes organizations who provide support to the senior population residing in Georgetown. F. Discussing of the Priority Initiatives: Communication, Transportation, Dental Care, Affordable Housing, Mental Health – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Transportation – Dennis Dalrymple reported that Faith in Action is taking into consideration conducting a study pertaining to long range planning and outreach for providing their services to the senior residents of Georgetown. Legal Aid: Patrick Lloyd introduced Brittany Carter, a University of Texas social work intern working on her Master thesis, and gaining experience/knowledge as she works with Patrick. On October 12th, the Georgetown Gospel Justice Center held an Open House to celebrate their legal aid services provided at the Library every third Saturday morning of each month. Dental: Beverly Stehle reported that she has discussed with approximately 50 dentist if they would consider volunteering their services to provide dental care, through a recognized and licensed charitable organization, providing free or financially assisted dental care. None of the dentist were interested. Falls: Ron Brandon expressed an interest in the ratio of falls/balances among senior citizens and the classes offered to seniors with these two health issues. Discussion occurred that Faith in Action provides classes on falls and balance to seniors. Arlana Bryant, Medical/Health Coordinator with the Georgetown Fire Department, distributed a flyer announcing a free workshop series entitled “A Matter of Balance, Managing Concerns about Falls” given October 25th – November 17th, sponsored by AGE of Central Texas and CaregiverU (funding provided through grant from St. David’s Foundation). Communication: Tiffany will be managing the communications as needed for Senior Day in April. G. Discussion of future agendas and priorities – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Virginia Lazenby will be updating and discussing the Senior Expo Fair. Continue discussions pertaining to the Priority Initiatives during upcoming meetings. Adjournment The next Commission meeting will be Monday, November 20, 2017, at 6:00 p.m., at the Public Safety Facility, 3500 DB Wood Road, Georgetown, Texas. The meeting adjourned at 7:57 p.m. on a motion by Virginia Lazenby, seconded by Beverly Stehle, which the Board approved unanimously.
