H. Presentation and discussion of ideas for priority needs of senior residents living in the City of
Georgetown – Steve Fought, Georgetown City Council, District 4. Chairman Jantzen introduced
Steve Fought. Councilman Fought shared the following as his areas of interest for the senior
residents of Georgetown: aging in place, bus systems, Meals on Wheels, Silver Shields, Take Me
Home, visiting nurses, ADA, healthcare, assisted living (all forms), and Hospice. Councilman
Fought is concerned that Georgetown does not have a “physical” Hospice presence within the City
of Georgetown. He envisions a center similar to Christopher House of Austin. Councilman Fought
stated that Georgetown’s senior population should continue to grow as rapidly as any other age
segment. He expressed that by the time Sun City is built out, it alone will constitute some 18,000
residents of an estimated population of 80,000 in Georgetown. Councilman Fought feels that the
Commission on Aging should become vitally involved by being the voice of the City as it relates to
senior issues, initiating suggestions to Council on improvements needed. For instance, Councilman
Fought cited the antiquated ‘curbs’ in numerous downtown locations as an example for need for
solutions and he invited the Commission to offer suggestions. Councilman Fought also indicated
that in recent months City Council had acted on things that they should have asked the opinion of
the Commission before moving ahead. He shared that he plans to be more cognizant of utilizing the
Commission’s presence to assist City Council.
I. Presentation and discussion regarding how the Senior Resource Guide provides available
lifestyle resources for active aging adults, caregivers and elder care professionals – Karyn
Dean, President, SRG Services, Inc. Ms. Dean explained how over twenty years ago she became
an eldercare advocate due to the caregiving she was giving to her grandmother, and it was through
that experience that the Senior Resource Guide came into being. The Senior Resource Guide is a
publication that provides a comprehensive collection of resources for the benefit of the community,
especially older adults and the caregivers and professionals working to serve them. The Board will
be reviewing their copy of the Senior Resource Guide and contact Ms. Dean with additional agencies
in Georgetown that could possibly be incorporated into the Senior Resource Guide.
J. Discussion and approval of future meeting times, dates and location – Gene Jantzen, Board
Chair. The Commission discussed various meeting dates and times. Chairman Jantzen asked for a
show of hands of who could not meet during the day because of work commitments. Six
Commissioners raised their hands. Chairman Jantzen asked for a show of hands of who would
prefer to meet during the day. One Commissioner raised their hand. The Commission will continue
meeting on the third Monday of each month, 6:00-8:00 p.m., at the Public Safety Facility, 3500 DB
Woods Road.
