The City of Georgetown is committed to compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). If you require assistance in participating at a public meeting due to a disability, as defined under the ADA, reasonable assistance, adaptations, or accommodations will be provided upon request. Please contact the City Secretary’s Office, at least four (4) days prior to the scheduled meeting date, at (512) 930-3652 or City Hall at 113 East 8th Street for additional information; TTY users route through Relay Texas at 711. Regular Session (This Regular session may, at any time, be recessed to convene an Executive Session for any purpose authorized by the Open Meetings Act, Texas Government Code 551.) A. Call to Order Chairman Gene Jantzen called the meeting to order at 6:00 p.m. Eight Board members were present, with Board member Valerie Nicholson absent, thus constituting a quorum. Also present were Support Staff Liaison Fire Chief John Sullivan and Staff Liaison Office Specialist Linda White. Statutory Consent Agenda B. Consideration and possible action to approve the minutes of the meeting held on March 20, 2017. Bernie Farkas moved to approve the minutes from the meeting held on March 20, 2017. Ron Brandon seconded the motion, which the Board approved unanimously. (8-0) Legislative Regular Agenda C. Presentation and discussion of ideas for priority needs of senior residents living in the City of Georgetown – John Hesser, Georgetown City Council, District 3. Chairman Jantzen introduced Council member John Hesser. Councilman Hesser shared the following as his areas of interest for the senior residents of Georgetown: make certain the surface areas of the sidewalks and street crosswalks in the downtown area are safe walking areas; hospice; adult day care; secure building(s) for hospice and adult day care; transportation. Councilman Hesser expressed the importance of communicating to senior residents, their families and caregivers the availability of various agencies throughout Georgetown who provide assistance to senior residents. D. Presentation and discussion of social needs among older adult patrons of the Georgetown Public Library – Patrick Lloyd, Community Resources Coordinator, Georgetown Public Library. Mr. Lloyd shared that the top overall need of the 60+ age group is legal assistance. There is domestic violence in homes of the older adult patrons and many times the violence is not reported. Emergency housing is definitely among the top needs of the older adults. There are more homeless men than women who visit the Library with many of these having health issues. Mr. Lloyd shared that there are instances where there is no referral place within the City of Georgetown. He is researching if there are lawyers who would provide volunteer services for these older adult patrons. The Board suggested contacting Bluebonnet Trail, Lone Star Circle of Care and Silver Senior Services. E. Explanation of the Priority Initiatives: Communication, Transportation, Dental Care, Affordable Housing, Mental health and new Commission members choosing a Priority Page 4 of 9 Commission on Aging April 17, 2017 2 Initiative – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Transportation: Dan Bonner and Ginny Hahn; Mental Health: Ron Brandon and Bernie Farkas; Dental: Beverly Stehle; Affordable Housing: Virginia Lazenby; Communication: Tiffany Enos and Valerie Nicholson. F. Discussion of future agendas and priorities – Gene Jantzen, Board Chair. Tiffany Enos has arranged for Senior Silver Service to present at the May meeting. Gene Jantzen will contact Ty Gipson, City Councilman representing District 5, to speak during the May meeting. At the May meeting, Fire Chief Sullivan will update the Commission of pre-hospital medical services and needs within the community. Continue discussions pertaining to the Priority Initiatives during upcoming meetings. Adjournment The next Commission meeting will be Monday, May 15th, at 6:00 p.m., at the Public Safety Facility, 3500 DB Wood Road, Georgetown, Texas.
